If youre looking for a way to spend quality time with your kids, while working on academics in a creative way, look no further than cooking and baking! The culinary arts are chock full of curriculum connections. Here is a grade by grade breakdown of the academic benefits of cooking: Grades 1-5 - ESTIMATION & TIME: Estimate how long it will take to complete each step in your recipe. Using a picture of a clock, mark out each time segment, and colour them in!... - MONEY SENSE + ADDITION & SUBTRACTION: Use the cost of each item in your recipe to invent some addition/subtraction exercises! If youre making tacos, but someone in your family hates tomatoes, how much would the recipe cost without tomatoes? - MULTIPLICATION & DIVISION: Compare the number of servings in your recipe to the number of people in your family to invent some multiplication and division exercises. If you need to feed 4 people, and your recipe makes 12 muffins, how many muffins would each person get? Grades 6-8 - CONVERTING UNITS OF MEASUREMENT: Unit conversion helps to ensure that the right amount of each ingredient makes it into your dish. Use proper formulas to convert units of measurement while shopping/cooking. - FRACTIONS: Most cup/tsp/tbsp measurements in recipes are listed as fractions. Multiply and divide fractions by doubling, tripling, or halving your recipe. - FOOD SAFETY: Learning how to select, handle, prepare, and store food safely is key for protecting your family against food poisoning. Use the Govt of Canadas Food Safety Tip page to learn more! Grades 9-12 - BUDGETING & BUSINESS: Is the world ready for you to go pro with that apple pie you just made? Make a business plan to sell your creation at a farmers market. Consider your target consumer, marketing, and a budget. - CULINARY SCIENCE & CHEMISTRY: Pick one of your favourite prepared foods. Research how chemistry is used in the preparation of that food, and describe the process from start to finish. - MEAL PLANNING & THE CANADA FOOD GUIDE: Being able to plan and prepare meals is a great skill. Using the Canada Food Guide, create a meal plan that would last you a week."

Parents, here is a great guide to help manage screen time with your children: 1. Have a Conversation About It: The key to setting limits around screen time is to involve your child in making the rules. To begin, discuss and decide together which apps and websites could be labelled just for fun and which could be labelled learning. For example, Facebook might be a just for fun website, whereas the Duolingo app could be listed under learning! Once you have categorized your ...apps and websites together, cooperatively decide what amount of screen time should be allowed for each category . Write down your plan together et voila! You now have a mutually agreed upon plan for screen time. 2. Set a Schedule for Specific Apps and Devices: Whether you use an old-fashioned timer or a technology like Apples built-in Screen Time feature, there are many ways of keeping track of how much time your child is spending on a particular device, app, or website! One simple and no-cost method is to set a schedule by putting aside a dedicated time in the day for a particular activity. For example, maybe 6-6:30pm on weeknights could be the social media half hour, or Friday nights are movie nights. 3.Be Understanding: Teaching your child healthy boundaries around screen time can be part of an overall plan to help them build strong habits like oral hygiene or exercise. But during these times of uncertainty, its OK to be less rigid in your limiting of screen time too. Given the circumstances, Its understandable that we and our children may more often find ourselves turning to our devices for entertainment and distraction in the weeks ahead. The main point to keep in mind is that limiting screen time is an attempt to strike an overall balance.

Tip for #backtoschool . . .Can celebrating something were not looking forward to change how we feel about it? Usually when we celebrate New years, birthdays etc its to get us the right frame of mind to make the most of the journey to come. When it comes to back 2 school why dont we apply the same strategy? We celebrate the arrival of summer (usually because of the excitement to chill with family friends and make the most of the outdoors) but why dont we celebrate the mome...nts to come that will challenge us and show us what we are capable of. Perhaps celebrating what we arent looking forward to, can change how we feel about it and ultimately change the outcome. . . . . founder of @tutorbright, @sunnyv_tb on Global Morning Show . #backtoschool #parentingwin #momlife #dadlife #parentingtips #teacherlife #teachersfollowteachers #tutoring #tutor #celebration #parenting #parenthood #motivation #inspiration See more
