River Heights takes in-school field trip École River Heights School students went on a field trip without leaving the classroom. On Nov. 6, River Heights teache...r Petra Thanisch and her Grade 8 class participated in the First Farmers virtual field trip by the Manitoba Museum. In-person school trips aren’t currently permitted under COVID-19 restrictions. The interactive program put the field in field trip, exploring how Indigenous farmers planted and harvested food crops centuries ago. In Grade 8 history, we look at how farming begins, but usually it’s focused on the Middle East This field trip looks at the first farmers in the Americas, Thanisch said. The presenter went through the history of corn and all the crops that were cultivated by Indigenous people in the Americas that enhance our diet now. She also showed us examples of early farming in Manitoba. She was super engaging and she had lots of visuals. The First Farmers field trip was presented by Anya Moodie-Foster, Learning and Engagement Supervisor at the Manitoba Museum. Luxton receives praise from Mayor A Luxton School teacher's incorporation of Indigenous knowledge in the classroom caught the attention of Mayor Brian Bowman. S...arah Martens, who teaches Grades 4 and 5 at Luxton, kicked off the school year by having her students create a medicine wheel, an Indigenous symbol which represents the interaction of one's physical, mental, emotional and spiritual components. CTV News Winnipeg posted a story on Martens and her medicine wheel initiative on Sept. 21. On Oct. 13, Martens arrived at Luxton to find an envelope in her mailbox from the Mayor's Office at City Hall. "I kind of freaked out a little bit. I wasn't expecting it at all. It was so nice," said Martens of the letter. "It was addressed to me, but Mayor Bowman talked about my students in it as well. I read it out to them and they were so excited. They were clapping and one of them was like 'This is amazing!' "We put the letter in a frame on the wall next to the medicine wheel. I also photocopied it so they could take it home to show their parents." Read more: http://bit.ly/luxtonteacherinspires #WinnipegSD #WSDParents #WSDTeachers #WSDStudents #KeepLearning
