With report cards being sent home this month I want to take the opportunity to mention that tutoring services with Horizon are based on the Orton-Gillingham approach. So what does this mean exactly? The O-G approach is designed for struggling readers and teaches the connections between sounds and letters. Students will engage in multisensory activities during each tutoring session including visual, auditory and kinesthetic applications.

For many students progress reports have gone home and Parent-Teacher Interviews have been scheduled. Why not also schedule a time to meet to discuss tutoring for your child?

What does a typical Horizon Tutoring session look like? Each session follows the same predictable format, with focus and activities varying. We start by checking in and then reviewing sight words and previous sessions material. This is followed by an introduction of the next topic (if the student is ready to move on). A few different activities are used to work with this new 'sound'. The activities involve using a assortment of materials and physical movement to keep students motivated and focused. Each session ends with reading together.
