Theatre Under The Stars Vancouver Alumni 22.10.2020

Hello, TUTS Alumni! Many of you will know Christina Sinosich, the talented and generous designer of hundreds of costumes for the TUTS stage over the past many years. She and her team are struggling (as many artists are) to deal with the impact of the pandemic on their work and livelihood. Chris' associate Donnie Tejani has organized a crowdfunding campaign to help the costume shop through this difficult time, so it can thrive again when theatre returns. Check it out at the link below! https://www.gofundme.com/f/vancouver-costume-shop-strugglin

Happy fall, TUTS friends! Our September 2020 #ThrowbackThursday post takes us back to the summer of 1972, when we presented BRIGADOON and GUYS & DOLLS. Sharp-eyed readers will notice that we were still called "Theatre in the Park" at that time. Were you there? Tell us what you remember! With grateful thanks as always to archivists Cecilia and Roger Smith for these materials that take us down memory lane!

It's that time again! Our August 2020 #ThrowbackThursday post is dedicated to the summer of 1994, when we presented WEST SIDE STORY and LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. Were you there? Tell us what you remember! With grateful thanks as always to archivists Cecilia and Roger Smith for these materials that take us down memory lane!

Hey, TUTS Alumni friends, are you following TUTS' main Facebook and Instagram pages in addition to this one? We've got some cool stuff happening over there this summer. Coming up this Thursday (tomorrow!) at 1pm, join long-time alumna Nevada Banks on Instagram Live for a free fitness class (instagram.com/tutsvancouver)! Nevada's Yoga & Pilates-related practice will ease your muscle tension and give you a relaxing massage in the comfort of your home. Check it out below!

Happy #ThrowbackThursday, TUTS friends! We're not going too far back for this month's trip down memory lane ...since last Sunday would have been Alumni Night 2020, we thought take a look back at all the fun we had at Alumni Night 2019! We so look forward to the day when we can gather like this at the Bowl again.

Hello, TUTS Alumni community! We are pausing our monthly Throwback post for June, in favour of sharing this important statement: A Message From TUTS’ Board of Directors & Staff The events of the past couple of weeks have accelerated many internal discussions about where we have been, and where we need to be. We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement and activists everywhere who are fighting against racial injustice and oppression. We are committed to doing o...ur part to combat systemic racism. We know that in order for lasting change to occur, anti-racist policies and procedures must be built into our organizational infrastructure. We must consider all aspects of how we operate, including casting, hiring of creative teams, volunteer involvement, and Board recruitment. We must also look carefully at our reporting structure and communications channels, with a view to ensuring that anyone involved with TUTS feels comfortable to safely and constructively raise concerns at any time. Actions that we take in all these areas must be accompanied by metrics via which Board and staff can regularly assess their effectiveness. We will continue to communicate our plans in more detail as they emerge. Now and throughout this journey, we welcome input from you, our community. We are discussing a number of ideas around how to foster dialogue and receive feedback, but for starters, please feel free to share your thoughts with us at [email protected]. Operations Manager Kevin Woo’s virtual door is also always open at [email protected]. We are grateful to the many, many BIPOC artists in the theatre community who have bravely and passionately raised their voices (and continue to do so). We are listening, we hear you, we support you, and we will act. With thanks, TUTS' Board Of Directors Patrick Roberge, Peter Hallett, Karen Sciarretta, Melanie Thompson, Nelli Hanbury, Karin Hung, Ted Steeves, Jane Wace

For this month's trip down memory lane, we're looking back to the summer of 1969, a milestone year in TUTS' long history! This was when the brave folks at Dunbar Musical Theatre decided to bring summer theatre back to Malkin Bowl after a 6-year hiatus. With thanks as always to Cecilia and Roger Smith (who, incidentally, were part of the group that led the charge in 1969) for the archival materials.

Happy #ThrowbackThursday, TUTS friends! This month we are looking back to the summer of 1995 - a somewhat unusual year in that we only presented one show: ANNIE GET YOUR GUN. Check out these photos and scanned programme pages (with thanks as always to Cecilia and Roger Smith for the archival materials)!

The Theatre Under the Stars Vancouver family was very much saddened today to learn that long-time friend and community member Nathan Fong has passed away. Nathan had been involved with TUTS since the 1970s, first as an orchestra member (playing violin for Annie Get Your Gun in 1978, No No Nanette in 1979, Oklahoma in 1980, My Fair Lady in 1986 and West Side Story in 1988) and then as a performer. He won the E.V. Young Award for his performance as Lun Tha in The King and I in ...1989, and later appeared in Pajama Game, Guys & Dolls and Sweet Charity. See below for a selection of archival materials! Later on, Nathan was a member of the Board of Directors (2011-12), and volunteered every year as a bartender, right up to and including this past summer. We will miss his big smile and fun-loving spirit very much, and we send our deepest condolences to his family and friends. Today is a sad day for the TUTS family, but the most important thing right now is to stay connected, and find new ways to build community even though we can't gather in person. And really, that's what this page is all about! We are connected by our love of TUTS and the memories we share of our times down at Malkin Bowl. So...how about a #ThrowbackThursday post?? This month's edition is a look back to the summer of 2000, when we presented GREASE and SOUTH PACIFIC. Were you there? Tell us what you remember, in the comments...
