Discipline is boring. Discipline is not spectacular. Discipline is discreet, silent, hard, and annoying. Motivation is exciting. Motivation is spectacular, shareable, inspiring. Motivation is exhilarating. But you cannot get from a certain level to the next one only with discipline, or only with motivation. ... -Dragos Roua

The recent decision by the USEF with regards to events to take place at the new WEC facilities in Ocala has brought a long-standing debate to the forefront. In ...the past three years I have relocated full time to the US after a lifetime competing in Europe to continue to pursue the sport . For many years I had heard my American counterparts speak frustratedly about the limitations the mileage rule creates here in the States. I know a divisive aspect of our sport is the literal Us versus them attitude with regards to European equestrianism versus American. I can assure you this is the last agenda I wish to push here. That said, there is no question to me that the mileage rule is crippling the sport in America. We live in a country that thrives on competition, a unique nation that allows those with drive, passion and talent to rise to the top. When presented with opportunities, we pursue them. It’s a fundamental aspect of this country, and a fundamental aspect of the sport itself. The alternative is stagnation, greed and, at times, outright laziness. The mileage rule stunts progress, protects the status quo and hinders opportunities for growth. This isn’t an opinion, it is a fact. This sport must evolve to survive and thrive. One can only look at the rapid improvements made to protect the bodies of horses and riders in the past 20 years alone - breakaway cups, safe (not decorative) helmets, and the growing popularity of the safety vest. Each of these advancements was met with criticism and more than a few rolled eyes. And yet, each of them are now regarded as decisions that could’ve been made earlier for the health of all of those that love the sport, and their animals. Companies that protected the old way of competing failed. Those that adapted for the better of the rider, thrived. I believe the mileage rule will follow suit. It is one of the last vestiges of a bygone era that should be just that - gone. We need to encourage competition, foster creativity, and endorse newness and change. If we do not, we will fall behind - as a country, as a system and as athletes It is quite simple.
