The mother child bond is so strong! How sweet is this mother/child tattoo by cheyo.winter? Photo used with permission. My job as an IBCLC is to nurture this bond through infant feeding. I can be hired: -In your pregnancy as a private lesson to discuss all things breastfeeding, breastfeeding goals, why to choose this method of feeding, positions, latch tips and how to get through potential/known barriers or past breastfeeding challenges.... -For your planned home birth. As you won’t have the lovely post partum nurses to help latch, pump/hand express and answer questions 24/7 at home when your midwife isn’t there for a check up. -In a group breastfeeding class that I’m organizing every 2-3 months called Breastfeeding 101. -Anytime during post partum if feeding isn’t going as smoothly as you planned, if it’s painful, baby has a low weight gain, reflux and oversupply issues, low supply issues or if you are heading back to work and have pumping/weaning questions. Contact me via email: [email protected] by phone (listed in my contact section) or by private messenger on Facebook. See more

There are currently a few Jan/Feb spaces left for this online and affordable event to support families starting their infant feeding journey! Please check this out and pass it on! When Bonnie Henry says it’s ok again, I will announce dates for my breastfeeding 101 classes. Until then, this is an excellent resource. http://www.bclca.ca/event-4087019

Do you want to increase your chance of having a successful breastfeeding journey? Get in bed, lay on your side, and nurse. Don’t watch the clock, don’t time fee...ds, just snuggle with your baby and offer the breast as often as possible. I work with mothers with perineal tears, tailbone injuries, and/or hemorrhoids, and no one has suggested this position. It does such a disservice to the new mother. Babies that have soreness from the delivery love this position. Mom does not need to touch their sore head, neck and shoulders to position them. Their jaw can move more freely. So much healing and bonding can happen in a side lying position. In many countries, mothers remain in bed for 30-40 days and only sit up to eat. Every breastfeeding session is done lying down. If you have other children, have them snuggle in bed with you and watch TV. If you see this prenatally, I hope it helps you understand how important it is to be intentional about your postpartum period and plan for lots of resting, healing, and bonding. For mothers that have had a cesarean birth, it may take a few days to be able to lay on your side. You can try a more laid back position, called biological nursing, which is also a position that encourages healing. What was your favorite breastfeeding position in the first few weeks after you gave birth? Did anyone encourage you to lay down or lean back and get comfortable? I took this photo this week of this 2-day old baby born at @thebirthnestatcatlincourt in Glendale, Arizona. She has an amazing birth team that refers to me often. #teamwork! . . . . . .

Fantastic book suggestions from Here we grow. I personally found the birth partner and oh crap to be so very helpful. I guess I just got lucky with babies who liked sleeping but I might read the sleep one anyway just to enjoy learning more! Please feel free to comment with parenting books that helped you or that you’d like to read one day! I loved the la Leche book The Womanly art of breastfeeding too!
