Two Mountains Forge 12.11.2020

Just finished this big cleaver. It is forged from 5160 spring steel, finished "as forged", with a razor-sharp edge. The scales are stabilized walnut, with brass pins. 6 x 4 x 1/4 inch blade, weight is 1 3/4 pounds...lots of momentum!

Little Neck Knives Made from "Scraps" in my shop - small pieces of steel and cut-offs from handle material make great little knives. These are AEBL stainless steel, with brass / German silver guards. Sort of a mini-Bowie style. These are popular with hikers, bikers, campers and eccentric fashionistas...

Two German "Hirschfaenger" - a shortened version of the traditional hunting sword, Hirschfaenger were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Nazis tried to revive the tradition (all things traditionally German) and there were some nice ones made in the 30's and 40's, but a lot of garish ones, too. These are two traditional, "antiqued" examples I recently finished. 12 inch blades, one as a dagger, the other a sabre-bladed, false-edged knife. The steel is W1 for the dagger and 1095 for the knife. Brass and stag furniture on the dagger, German silver and "ebonized" walnut on the knife. I'm working on a third (and BEST) version now...

New from my shop: a big drop-point hunter with a beautiful hamon. I have been playing around with this technique and this is the best result so far. The 6 3/4 inch by 1 1/2 inch blade is 1095, with stabilized, spalted walnut scales, stainless bolster, spacers and pins.

New off the Bench: a big D-Guard Bowie with a seven-inch 5160 blade and purple heart grip. The finish is a mustard and bleach etched "forced patina". The guard is forged from a plate of brass, with a brass pommel and antler spacers. This is my first attempt at a D-guard, but not the last!
