Eight months into this pandemic and parents may be seeing some changes in their children's play. Dolls are being asked to keep their social distance and maybe even use a bit of hand sanitizer. So what does this mean? Should we be worried? No. Actually it's a good sign that they are working through their emotions and it can even offer parents an opportunity to learn what is worrying their child. - American Speech-Language-Hearing Association

I talk a lot about the importance of early intervention- but sometimes that’s hard for parents to know WHEN exactly that means. And that makes sense because it ...really can depend on so many factors! I polled some of my followers and asked when they would take their own child for a speech evaluation, and the magic number for most people was between 15-18 months. Personally, I would evaluate at 15 months if there were no words. If you DO decide to wait a couple of months before evaluating, that’s ok- and I have a post for you tomorrow for what to do while you wait! (Poll results in my stories!) What about you? What age do you think is the magic age to start therapy if there are no words?

Please oh please stop encouraging parents to WAIT when their child is not meeting milestones. Early intervention is so important for many kids- and many are mis...sing out and/or starting much later than is ideal. Let’s start when the delay is small rather than waiting until they have significant delays that are more difficult to overcome! See more

From the American Academy of Pediatrics - support for Developmental and NDBIs interventions vs. ABA. Hopefully, this will stop pediatricians from auto-recommending ABA regardless of the child’s presentation.

Autism is so complex and frequently misunderstood - so be careful when googling! Almost every child (and adult) will have 1 or 2 characteristics- but that does ...not mean they are autistic. Now, I am ALL about getting an evaluation if you have concerns or notice several characteristics, but it’s also important to know autism is more than one or two differences. Also, many characteristics you find on goggle like hand flapping, repeating others, sensory differences are very common in young children- and are a part of typical development at a young age. I usually recommend an evaluation if you notice differences in 2 of the key areas listed below- or if anyone who knows the child thinks an evaluation is necessary.

Instead of just reading the words in books, it can be SO MUCH MORE BENEFICIAL to also talk about the pictures! Here’s just some of the language concepts you can add to just one page in the book Snowmen All Year by C. Buehner!
