Two Crow Consulting Inc. 15.10.2020

I was lucky enough to participate in this ceremony today. It has been a few years in the making, but harvesting a potato variety that has been harvested by Tlingits for hundreds of years is pretty special.

Join us for the first harvest of Tlingit potatoes 11 a.m. Friday, September 11! For more information on the potatoes, enjoy the following article produced by th...e C/TFN Xalakách Héeni xayaax Farm. The life and times of the Lingít K’úntsx’ (Tlingit Potato) Lingít K’úntsx’ (Tlingit potatoes) have been produced in Tlingit gardens for over 200 years. The potatoes originate from South America (possibly Mexico or Chile) and were a trade item in Southeast Alaska in the early 1800s. The Tlingit potato is related to certain South American tubers, likely through trade routes. Historically, the coastal Tlingit planted them by the beach, at the forest’s edge, where there was ample sunlight and plenty of seaweed and fish gut fertilizer. That’s why they have their particular taste. Carcross/Tagish First Nation procured these potatoes from the coastal Tlingit Elders Nora Marks and Richard Dauenhauer’s garden in Juneau, Southern Alaska. We are proud of incorporating them as part of our food production this year for the first time in inland Tlingit/C/TFN history. This heirloom variety, which is also known as Maria’s Potato, is well-suited to Southeast Alaska, (and possibly to the Southern Yukon!) - it likes the rain and shows a natural resistance to slugs. For the first time this year the C/TFN farm and gardens were gifted these iconic seed potatoes and planted at the garden; the conditions have been very good for the potatoes’ growth! The C/TFN Tlingit potatoes were given manure and seaweed fertilizer. They were mostly watered through rain, and water from Choutla Creek at least twice a week. We would like to gift C/TFN Elders interested in growing the Tlingit potatoes one tuber to try in their home gardens. The rest will be kept as seeds to store and regenerate as part of C/TFN seed sovereignty, and the capacity to provide for future generations. At this beginning stage, seed sovereignty is a paramount.

Made a short trip to the Yukon to plan some work related to understanding traditional relationships with the land, and continue to develop our relationship.

A challenge I come across when talking about traditional knowledge is explaining that it is not something in the past, but something that is very much still practiced, honored, and modern. I am forever grateful to the elders and knowledge holders who have taken the time to teach me.. At the heart of such a view of authenticity is a belief that indigenous cultures cannot change, cannot recreate themselves and still claim to be indigenous. Nor can they be complicated, internally diverse or contradictory. Only the West has that privilege (Linda Tuhiwai Smith’s Decolonizing Methodologies, p.77).

I feel privileged to have grown up on the traditional territory of the Laichwitach People and was lucky to reconnect with the land and ocean recently
