Sometimes we meet people in passing - even virtually- that we don’t forget easily. Their words; their actions and even their prayers. Meet Desiree Emanuel aka @thefloordiva . Perhaps she’s not the typical face of construction- a typically male- dominated profession. Many tradeswomen feel their work is scrutinized more critically even though they have equal and sometimes better qualifications than men in the field. The stigma and sexism on a job site can often be debilitating ...and demoralizing. Yet, these strong tradeswomen do not wish to be seen as troublemakers hence hang in there and tough it out bravely, boldly and courageously to put food on the table. They are role models. They are warriors. They are women. It begins with pinkification. Toys, clothes and even job possibilities are exposed to girls at a young age. I saw a lot of Elsa’s on Halloween yet not many tilers. I was honoured to receive the following testimonial from Lindsay Maskell of the Ontario Building Construction Tradeswomen Association. We actually polled our members to see who they wanted to hear as a keynote speaker and that’s how we luckily were connected to Tina Varughese. We loved her keynote at the OBCT Virtual Conference today. Our attendees found the session very valuable and highly engaging. Unconscious bias is such an important topic. Next Halloween let’s buy our girls a hardhat and a toolbox; a graphing calculator or a football helmet.
