Happy Holidays Usually we would posting a picture from our Christmas party by now but due to covid 19 regulations we were forced to cancel celebrations this year. In lieu of spending money on a party we have decided to do something kind of randon and sponsor a goat named Chewy at SAINTS animal rescue. If you are unfamiliar SAINTS it is a local Mission organization that takes care of senior or medically complex pets and barnyard animals. You can find them at saintsrescue.ca

I wanted to write about a local Mission business that is operating its last year this year after 30 years in business. It is the Firwood Forest tree farm. Cutting down a large Christmas tree at their farm has been a part of my family's seasonal tradition for a number of years. Thank you to the Pankratz and Huber families for growing the Christmas trees that so many families have got to enjoy over years. Ian

WHO statement and CTV story regarding COVID-19 and dental visits: Some of you may have seen a recent story regarding seeking dental treatment in the current environment. We want to reassure you that dental treatment in Canada is deemed safe and that the WHO warning applies only to countries with uncontrolled community spread of COVID-19. The covid renovation is almost complete. We took advantage of our office being essentially closed for a couple months to add a new operatory. This is a new enclosed room with the best view in the house. Thanks to Glen at Caliente construction and Tom at Industryal cabinetry for the great work.

June 25th office update: We have been open for several weeks now and things are going very well. A sincere thank you to all of our patients who have come back to support the business. Things at the office are fairly similar to what you may have been used to in the past. We have reduced our patient and staff volume but some days can still feel as busy as they did before. If you arrive at your appointment and there are a few people in the waiting room please wait in the hall to... allow others to exit before coming in. May 26 covid update We are currently open at a significantly reduced capacity to service our patient needs. We have implemented a number of changes to try and keep our patients safe. We are in the midst of updating our website to showcase the changes being made but for the time being please feel free to contact our office over the phone so we can answer any questions you may have and book an appointment for you if you wish to do so. May 17 covid 19 update The BC dental community was given guidelines for re-opening on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately this is the definition of last minute since we were authorized to re-open the next business day. We were able to anticipate most but not all of the regulations that would alter our practice so we are in the process of becoming compliant. Ultimately we want to keep all of our patients as safe as possible and that means waiting just a few more business days to b...e open for dental treatment. We thank you for your patience. When we do get up and running we don't want to neglect any of our patients and are in the process of coming up with a plan to treat higher risk individuals such as those over 70 years of age or those with co-morbid conditions at certain times of the day to reduce interaction with other patients. We are also going above and beyond the minimal regulation standards for airflow and air sanitization with new units being installed in the coming weeks. May 13 Covid-19 update We have had several calls since John Horgan announced that dental offices can re-open as of May 19th. Although this was great news, the declaration was only the first small step in the re-opening process. Dentists in BC are regulated by the College of Dental Surgeons and as of today the CDSBC has not published any guidelines for the re-opening of dental clinics. These guidelines will include changes to our normal operating procedure, office layout, as w...ell as rules for PPE usage. Unfortunately for the dental community and patients requiring dental treatment, the government has not made PPE available to dental clinics at this time and have given us no timeline as to when they will release PPE to us. We are all hoping the CDSBC regulations are given to us immediately so we can start the process of trying to order the appropriate PPE and to re-organize our clinics to satisfy or exceed college requirements. During this time of office closure I have been trying to anticipate guidelines and brainstorm office policy changes to reduce inter-patient interactions and create time and space between patients and non-clinical staff. Depending on the regulations, when we do open again things might look a little different and the flow of your appointment might feel a little different but it's going to be the same great staff working on you and for the most part, things will be the same. May 4th office update: With all governmentally mandated covid 19 restrictions still in place nothing has changed with our office policies. We are still available to handle emergencies over the phone, in person, or can refer you to another appropriate facility if a referral is warranted. We are limiting in person interactions to past and present patients of our office at this time. If you are not a patient of our office then we recommend you contact your own dental office for ...care or direction. We are cautiously optimistic that we will get a partial return to service in the near future as several other provinces have already done so or have made plans to do so very soon. At this point the officials in British Colombia have not provided dentists with any guidelines or timeline for us to return to practice so we must all wait patiently. In this time of relative closure I am spending my time developing protocols aimed at minimizing interactions between patients as well as clinic upgrades to incorporate barriers and germicidal air purification units throughout the clinic. April 2nd office update: We are still available to our patients to treat those of you who are in pain. If you are having an issue we can either phone something into the pharmacy or see you in person in select circumstances. Any patients seen in person must be healthy and pass a covid 19 risk assessment. For further details about treatment or our current protocols to protect our staff and patients please call us. At the same time be aware that we are working at a significantly... reduced capacity and if we do not answer the phone, please leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible. March 26th covid 19 update Our office is currently open but with significantly reduced hours to handle patients who are in discomfort. There may be a receptionist working to answer your call but if not then please leave a message on our machine. Our goal is to get in touch with you within 24hrs and be able to physically treat you within 1-2 business days if needed. There is also a dental emergency phone line and the number should be on our website but we would rather handle ...our own patients if possible. I am sorry about any inconvenience this situation is causing. I will be posted relevant updates or changes to Facebook as they arise. Ian Smillie
