If your horse is not one that requires shoes all year round, then winter is an ideal time to pull your horse's shoes. Your horse is much less likely to pack snow in an unshod foot than one with shoes. Horseshoes tend to pack snow into hard snowballs and smooth horseshoes make excellent ice-skates. The packed snow and uneven frozen ground can bruise your horse’s sole so we have options to prevent this. If your horse for various reasons needs to keep shoes on in the winter, the 2 common options I can offer to prevent snowballing are flat hard plastic pads and an inside rim pad. I also offer borium for traction on the shoes. Contact me if you have any questions about your horse’s winter options. 780-975-0230

I received an update from the client I applied the hospital plate for about 8 weeks ago. When I first saw Casey she was non weight bearing lame due to a nail puncture in her foot. The owner is happy to report that today she is significantly more comfortable and occasionally 100% weight bearing on the affected foot. We will be resetting the plate to continue treatment. Thanks Shari for the positive feedback.

Today I applied bar shoes with a hospital plate on a horse as requested by their veterinarian. What is a hospital plate? The plate is made of a thin but strong aluminum and shaped to fit on the outside of the shoe. The plate is bolted on to the shoe itself and leaves the ability to remove the plate simply by unscrewing the bolts. The aluminum plate is necessary for this horse because the underlying sole is open due to an injury and the exposed corium needs to be covered to prevent further trauma. The idea of being able to remove the plate is to be able to apply topical treatments as well as clean the affected site and check on progress of growth without having to pull the entire shoe.

Tyler Kampjes Farrier and Blacksmithing services is now offering Equi-Pak application. What is it? Equi-Pak is a liquid urethane that provides support and protection for thin soled, flat-footed horses and absorbs the shock and concussion. It only takes about a minute to apply. It wont break down and it is impervious to debris and moisture. When it it removed it leaves the sole and frog in great condition. If this is something you are interested in having done in your appointment please give me a heads up and I will make sure I have adequate supply.
