Transitional Year Programme 11.11.2020

ATTN TYP Students and Alumni: TYP will be working with our friends at the Career & Co-Curricular Learning Network (CLNx) to host a special orientation about the work-study program at U of T. This is a great opportunity for students to be further engaged while earning some job experience and cash! In this session, you will learn strategies to write a more effective resume and cover letter, as well as better prepare for an interview. You will learn about the importance of tai...loring your approach, as well as how to communicate your skills, experiences, and accomplishments to potential employers. You are encouraged to ask questions throughout the session, as this will support us in better meeting your needs. This orientation will be taking place via Zoom on THURSDAY, AUGUST 6 from 11 am - 12:30 pm. Students must register in advance. To sign up, please email Lisa Smart ([email protected]) #community #adulteducation #workstudy #studentlife

We are always doing our best to make sure that courses at TYP are not only rooted in social justice and equity but also reflective of the experiences of our students. The field of Black Canadian Studies is slowly getting its due recognition at Canadian universities, thanks to the tireless work of Black scholars and student activists. For decades, Black scholars and students in Canada have found ways to bring Black studies into the academy. As part of #teachertuesday we are showcasing one of our amazing instructors, Chevy Eugene, who taught our Black Canadian Studies course this summer! Here are some of the readings they explored. #teachertuesday #adulteducation #toronto #community #blackstudies

TYP History Moment: this year is the 50th anniversary of our program and over the years we have had the privilege of having some of the most amazing people as students. One of those people were Toronto’s very own, DJ Son of S.O.U.L. Masimba Kadzirange, a.k.a. DJ Son of S.O.U.L. was a staple in Toronto’s Hip-Hop community who, unfortunately, passed away in 2016. The outpouring of endless tributes like this beautiful piece in graffiti alley speaks to not only his artistic talent but his warm heart and love for community. We are so proud to have been able to interact with such a remarkable human being who represents everything our program believes in. R.I.P. DJ Son of S.O.U.L., you will never be forgotten #adulteducation #community #graffiti #graffitialleytoronto

Meet one of our faculty members at the Transitional Year Programme, Stan Doyle-Wood! Dr. Doyle-Wood is an artist, poet, writer, scholar, and educator in the areas of critical anti-racism, equity, anti-colonial studies, and community engagement. Doyle-Wood’s scholarly work and practice lies in analysis and contestation of structural and accumulative forms of racialized violence and spirit-injury and the possibilities and praxis of resistance as embodied spiritual acts of pedag...ogy, survival, and liberation from the standpoint of the historically oppressed. Doyle-Wood has received community recognition and teaching awards for this work, including an Eagle Feather awarded at the U of T 2017 Pow Wow, the ASSU Terry Buckland Award for Diversity and Equity in Education, and the UTSU/APUS U of T Instructor’s Excellence in Teaching Award. On working at TYP, Stan says As an educator who is Black identifying with African and Indigenous ancestry I have always felt a sense of pride, energy and honour to be working in a program whose foundational identity, structure and roots stems from the revolutionary work of Black working class communities inToronto in the late 1960s and from their historical struggles against racism, colonialism and imperialism. It should not be forgotten that the realization and implimentation of the Transition al Year Program at the University of Toronto 50 years ago spearheaded also by Black radical organizations such as the Black Education Project gave rise to the many access and equity supports and programs that are in place at the U of T today". #teachertuesday #adulteducation #uoft #community

It’s National Indigenous Peoples Day! Our Sunday reading is none other Tracey Lindberg’s Birdie which is a story about the universal experience of recovering from wounds of the past, informed by the lore and knowledge of Cree traditions. Lindberg is a Canadian award-winning writer, scholar, lawyer, and Indigenous Rights activist from the Kelly Lake Cree Nation in British Columbia. She is Cree-Métis and a member of the As’in’i’wa’chi Ni’yaw Nation Rocky Mountain Cree. #indigenouseducation #indigenoushistory #uoft #community #adulteducation
