Speaker Spotlight! Hafiz is a 2nd year undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering. He is known to be a strong advocate for nature and wildlife conservation. His aim is to promote widespread implementation of sustainable design and eco-friendly engineering methods on a global scale. He earnestly enjoys exploring the wilderness of mother earth while framing precious moments with his long-time trusty sidekick: the Nikon D500, whenever possible! When asked his favourite activity to wind down, Hafiz said, "Sipping a hot cup of tea on the terrace or a walk in the woods with my small ‘featherly’ friends convincingly helps me to relax and remain carefree!". In 2017, Under GROW Foundation, Tracy launched Project150: Accomplished Immigrant Women in Canada where she began gathering stories from more than 200 immigrants women across Canada who had overcome adversity to achieve success in careers and lives. Many women who shared their stories often shared their desire for knowledge, resources & guidance they wish they had along the way. As she collected their stories of resilience, Tracy realized these wealth of knowledge could add valuable insights to other immigrant women and the communities, so she published the collection in a book; untold stories of immigrants women in Canada. In 2018, She Founded Grow Women Leaders a development and advancement platform designed to help BIWOC and immigrant women get hired and advance their careers. To transcend and reach their full potential; personal development, leadership, civic engagement and entrepreneurship. Speaker Spotlight! Alice Lam was born in Calgary to Chinese parents who were refugees from Vietnam. She has a BA in Economics from the University of Alberta and an MSc in Management from IESEG School of Management in France. She has worked in New York as a communications and marketing specialist and currently works in commercial real estate. Alice has been an active volunteer helping immigrant youth and seniors reach their full potential for over fifteen years. Most rec...ently, she founded the Calgary Community Fridge, a mutual aid project that raised $18,000.00 in two days. When asked what advice she has for students interested in leadership, she said, "Talk to as many people as you can about what makes a good leader. Learn from those who are in leadership positions (even if it means they were bad leaders - lots of learning there too!). And remember you don't know anybody's story. We all have to lead with empathy. Meet people where they are, and really focus on making sure you are leading from a place of pure desire for people to succeed, not model minority myths or capitalistic notions of what success should be." Catch Alice's session at #ASLS2021! See the schedule at asls2021.sched.com for details. #UASU #RISE

We asked Em what their advice is to students who are looking to engage in leadership! They say, "For me, my biggest obstacle to leadership has been imposter syndrome. My advice to student leaders is to know you're not alone in these feelings, to be kind and gentle with yourself, and to say yes to new opportunities!" Don't miss Em's session at #ASLS2021! Speaker Spotlight! Nadine Hatzitolios McGill holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Religious Studies, a Diploma of Nursing and has been a life-long learner of personal and spiritual mastery, as well as business and financial literacy. She is an international bestselling author in the collaboration What’s Self Love Got To Do With It? and the creator of a 20-episode podcast series called Alpha Unleashed How to tap into your creative zone, harness its power, and live a confident life. When asked what leadership means to her, Nadine said, "Leadership is Vulnerabravery, the word I coined which means having the courage to be who you are in order to lead yourself (and others) to highest potential. Leadership entails making decisions and taking action that can be difficult and lonely, but necessary. Leadership is knowing when to lead and when to follow.
