Have you been in to see SOUNDINGS a touring exhibition now at UBC’s @belkinartgallery ?? Admission is FREE! How can a score be a call and tool for decolonization? Soundings: An Exhibition in Five Parts features newly commissioned scores, performances, videos, sculptures and sound by Indigenous and other artists who respond to this question.... Part of this exhibition, Olivia Whetung’s Strata, invites viewers to select and pour beads into a mason jar on a metal plinth. The sound of these beads falling is both amplified and recorded. Following the coloured layers of the mason jar as a pattern, the Anishinaabe artist will create a beadwork as the jars fill. Once all the beads vials have been emptied, the jar will be removed, replaced with the beadworks from previous Soundings iterations, and the tracks of the falling beads will reverberate through the gallery. #oliviawhetung #soundings #belkinartgallery #ubc @curatorsintl . . . @hatch_artgallery @vasa.ubc @ubc_arts @ubc_studentlife @ubyssey @artsreportcitr #ubc @ahvaubc @dive.into.ubc

Giveaway! UBC ARTIVISIM: SEX + The Unheard has partnered up with @viffest to giveaway tickets to their online VIFF festival film NO ORDINARY MAN September 24 - October 7 American jazz musician Billy Tipton lived his entire life as a man. Reading the role of Billy, a roster of trans-masculine artists reframe and reclaim this misunderstood piece of queer history.... TO ENTER: 1. LIKE this post 2. Follow us @ubcartsculture @dive.into.ubc and @viffest 3. TAG a friend in the comment 4. If you SHARE on your story this post, you will be entered an additional entry for the giveaway, please tag @ubcartsculture and @dive.into.ubc when you repost to your story! Since Tipton’s death, the tabloid tale of a fame-driven woman who "duped" everyone by pretending to be a man has prevailed. Up-and-coming filmmakers Aisling Chin-Yee’s (The Rest of Us; producer: Rhymes for Young Ghouls) and Chase Joynt’s (Framing Agnes) clever approach asserts the dignity Tipton posthumously deserves by inviting his son, Billy Jr., to re-examine his father’s life through the lens of a new generation. Reading the role of Billy, a roster of trans-masculine artists reclaim this misunderstood piece of queer history for themselves and an entire community whose elders and heroes have more or less been left in the closet. Though Tipton himself can no longer consent to this newfound visibility or label, No Ordinary Man unapologetically celebrates Tipton’s gender expression and creates room to consider the nuance of an icon who achieved the unthinkable at a time when any perceived gender discrepancy could cost much more than a career. . . . . . . . . #onlinefilmfestival #queerhistory #transhistory #transmanofinstagram #billytipton #billytiptonfilm #yvrart @filmubc @ubc_studentlife @ubcfilmsociety #canadianfilm

Introducing your new UBC Arts + Culture whisperer Coral Santana! Coral is a Afro-Latina writer, producer, and activist born in the Dominican Republic. She began working in our virtual office in April and started the first of many bold moves to come by naming the theme for our 3rd annual UBC ARTIVISIM festival as SEX + The Unheard. Coral is a 4th-year student at UBC, majoring in Film Studies with a minor in Creative Writing. In her work, Coral explores her mixed heritage and... how colonialism has shaped her perception of self. Her writing is infused with memories from her childhood and how unlearning and relearning her history continues to shape her. As well, she is an avid advocate for gender, sex and sexuality empowerment, using her platforms to amplify the voices of resistance in her community. She is also the director of Dive Into UBC, a student-run organization that is closely aligned with UBC Arts + Culture in its focus on highlighting UBC student artists and fostering the arts and culture community at the university. Join Coral as she hosts the opening night Cabaret of our ARTIVISIM Festival this Friday 4-5PM and starts our SpeakEASY weekend - which also kicks off BC Culture Days! See more
