What can our governments do to address the impacts of the global environmental crisis on our lives? Join us for a public talk by Dr. David R. Boyd, UN Special Rapporteur, on the urgent need for the legal recognition and implementation of the human right to a healthy environment. While already recognized in the majority of countries, this right is not yet protected by national laws in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom or Japan. These countries are home to many envi...ronmentally damaging industries and are key contributors to the climate emergency, with effects that transcend domestic and international borders. Existing environmental laws are inadequate to effectively protect human and environmental health, highlighting the need for the right to a healthy environment to serve as a catalyst for rapid, systemic and transformative changes. Opening remarks will be made by Annamie Paul, leader of the Green Party of Canada, and Dr. Boyd will be introduced by Dr. David Suzuki, scientist and co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation. This Centre for Law & the Environment event is co-sponsored by: The UBC Sustainability Initiative UBC Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs United Nations Environment Programme Ecojustice Earthjustice Global Network for Human Rights and Environment Peter A. Join us on Feb 9 for a talk by Dr. Ingrid Waldron on environmental racism and injustice in Canada. Dr. Waldron will examine the social justice dimensions of race, place, and space in the Indigenous and Black communities in Canada, and unpack how hierarchies and intersections of race, culture, gender, income, class, and other social identities are spatialized in the places and spaces where we live, work, and play. The implications for law and lawyers will be discussed by Pro...fessor Dayna Scott of Osgoode Hall Law School. REGISTER HERE: https://allard.ubc.ca//no-fly-zone-speaker-mapping-racial- About the speaker: Dr. Ingrid Waldron is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health at Dalhousie University, the Team Co-Lead of the Improving the Health of People of African Descent Flagship at the Healthy Populations Institute at Dalhousie, and the Executive Director of the Environmental Noxiousness, Racial Inequities & Community Health Project (The ENRICH Project). The ENRICH Project was launched in 2012 to investigate and document the socio-economic, political, and health effects of environmental racism in African Nova Scotian and Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia, Canada. The ENRICH Project formed the basis to Dr. Waldron’s first book There’s Something in the Water: Environmental Racism in Indigenous and Black Communities, which received the 2020Society for Socialist Studies Errol Sharpe Book Prize and the 2019 Atlantic Book Award for Scholarly Writing. The 2020 Netflix documentary There’s Something in the Water is based on Dr. Waldron’s book and was co-produced by Waldron, actor Elliot Page, Ian Daniel, and Julia Sanderson.
