UBC Emergency First Response Team 11.12.2020

We’ve all seen the surge in cases recently and although it may feel easy to fall out of the habit of caution, COVID must still be taken seriously!!! It is important to keep yourself and those around you safe. The best way to do this is to stay home. However, for those necessary times when you must leave the house, do so whilst wearing a mask!! Masks mostly protect those around you from yourself as a precaution for asymptomatic infections or infections that have not showed the...ir signs or symptoms yet!!! Wearing it is a sign of respect for the health and lives of those around you. And it is important to note that studies have shown that it can benefit you too (not as well, but enough to wear one)! So, when choosing a mask, it is important to choose the right one to make sure this effort is not being wasted. Please follow the steps above and follow the link below for more details. And remember, WEARING A MASK DOES NOT RESOLVE THE NEED FOR A 6 FT DISTANCE. Please do your part and wear a mask if you can, and remain distant of others. Just because you can't see it, it doesn't mean it's not there. On behalf of the EFRT team, stay safe, healthy, and kind to one another #maximumefrt https://www.cdc.gov//preve/cloth-face-cover-guidance.html

Hey there! My name is Becca and Im one of the trainers and coordinators for EFRT this year. As a trainer I run courses to make sure our responders are able to get their first responder certifications. As a coordinator I help to keep the team organized and running as smoothly as possible and I help to support both the responders and other members of the exec team. My favorite part of EFRT has got to be the people (super cheesy, i know!). But I really enjoy getting to know all... the team members each year and Ive also made some close friends through the team. As a trainer, I also love seeing people gain confidence in their skills and come into their own as responders. Im Emily, 4th year microbio major and im one of the coordinators, along with Becca. I help make sure the team operates smoothly. I help to organize and facilitate meetings and (video)calls for the team, along with coordinating other administrative matters that fall across multiple portfolios. I enjoy making cards for people (thank you cards, happy birthday cards etc) from scratch, Netflix and reading. My favourite parts about being part of the team are knowing i helped someone out at the end of the day, and seeing members grow through being a part of the team!

Hi, Im Kailey! Im in third year human kinetics and this is my third year with EFRT. In my spare time I enjoy going to the movies, eating food with friends and practicing CPR. I am one half of our internal affairs team! I joined EFRT to meet lots of like-minded people and gain experience that would help me achieve my dream of becoming a geriatric physician. I love my position with IA because I get to know our wonderful team really well! Hey everyone! My name is Lauren and I...m in 4th year nursing and this is also my 4th year on EFRT! I joined EFRT in first year because I thought it would be a great opportunity to help out on campus as well as learn some first aid skills. In my free time, I enjoy pretty much anything outdoors such as hiking with my dogs Bella and Finn, camping and kayaking in the summer and skiing in the winter. My role on the leadership team is internal affairs which means that I ensure the team functions well on a day to day basis! See more

Hey my name is Agatka !! I joined EFRT last year hoping to get more involved on campus and what better way to do that then learn new skills like how to stabilize someones spine or control a hemorrhage. You can take my word for it, it was awesome!!! Outside of EFRT Im a third year medical molecular biology major but when I can get away from the books youll catch me skiing, camping, hiking or kiteboarding. My role on the leadership team is scheduling shifts/organizing events on and off campus for our responders to practice their skills (unfortunately not a whole lot of this happening this semester ) For now Ill be working alongside other members to make sure were keeping connected with all of you.

Hey guys, Im Brian! Im a fourth year Computer Science major with a minor in Psychology. Outside of school, my favourite thing to do is volunteer! On campus, you may have seen me around on shift in EFRT or at B.A.R.K. If you havent, then I encourage you to come say hi and pet some cute dogs while your at it (once its safe to do so of course)! I am one of the two Drill Sergeants on this years team and I work alongside Dylan to ensure that every team member is well trained a...nd comfortable in their ability to keep everyone safe. This looks a lot different this year and we will be conducting training sessions over zoom for our team members to keep their skills sharp! The best part of being part of the team is being able to try something new while contributing to the wellbeing of this fantastic community at UBCO. I love the challenge it brings and cant wait to be back on shift once it is safe to do so. Stay healthy! Hello Friends! My name is Dylan and I am from Seattle, Washington. I am in my second year of my Medical/Molecular Biology major with a potential minor in Political Science. I have a plethora of hobbies ranging from leisurely reading - currently Im reading Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow - to rock climbing and distance running. Ive recently taken up the hobby of knitting and Im an ardent gym frequenter. I drink tea and coffee religiously and have the distinct pleasure of serving you all as one of your drill sergeants - or, as I prefer to refer to myself, your supplemental learning guide. I, alongside Brian, work to provide you with intriguing lesson plans to further your understanding of emergency first-aid response and strive to ensure that those on the EFRT team remain well-practiced with their lifesaving skills. Moreover, Brian and I work to provide the team with material to further the learning of our responders and assist with any other obligations regarding the executive team. Ive been a lifeguard for the last three years and am passionate about serving others. When I learned of the opportunity to volunteer as a first responder I knew I had to enroll. I look forward to the exciting new year and am ecstatic to be joining you all - stay safe and stay well during these tempestuous times.

Hi Im Jill! Im a third year Medical/Molecular Biology major and I am a part of the media and promotions team. I work alongside Kristyn to help promote the team at events, fundraisers, and online (something thats very important during these crazy times!) I enjoy spending time outside doing things like hiking, camping, reading, and hanging out with my two dogs, Scout and Zuzu. A fun fact about me is that I was a gymnast for 16 years and was a coach for 3 years before coming ...to UBCO. I love being able to help people and I joined the EFRT team so that I could continue doing so, all while learning and practicing my First-Aid skills and gaining medical experience! I enjoy being able to help out my community and the people I care about on campus and love being able to work alongside so many awesome people! With most of everyday life being shifted to online, Kristyn and I are excited to keep everyone in the community as engaged with the team as possible virtually. We cant wait to keep in touch with you all, dont hesitate to reach out to us! Im Kristyn, and Im in my second year of medical and molecular biology at UBCO. This is also my second year with EFRT. Outside of school, I like to explore the outdoors by hiking and swimming. I have been a lifeguard for three years, and I am passionate about helping people, so I jumped on the opportunity to become a first responder with EFRT. Plus, its so fun to volunteer with like-minded people that also love first-aid. I love being part of EFRT because it allows me to help people and gain medical experience while having a great time with the EFRT community. In my position with media and promotions, I love that I can share just how awesome EFRT is with everyone else! See more

We are sad to announce that the UBC Emergency First Response Team will remain off call for the fall 2020 semester. This was a difficult decision but it is what is best to keep both our responders and the community safe. We will revisit our options next semester in January 2021. During this time, our responders will remain active and continue to learn and practice our first aid skills through virtual training sessions to keep our knowledge sharp, as well as work behind the sc...enes to plan for whats to come. Until then, keep an eye out on our social media pages for updates on our plans, our members, and some tips on how you guys can stay safe during this unique time. Although we will not be on shift, we are dedicated to continue our care for you all and we will remain active online communicating through social media and emails. If you have any questions or comments, dont be afraid to reach out to us! You can contact us on our Facebook or instagram account, or through email at [email protected] If you need help on campus, you can reach UBCO security 24/7 at 250-807-8111 We wish you a safe and healthy start to the 2020/2021 school year and we will see you again soon! #maximumefrt

For #NationalVolunteerWeek #NVM2020 we would like to recognize and thank our student volunteer UBC Emergency First Response Team. They spend many hours training... and responding to First Aid calls side by side with our Security team. During the quiet times on shift, they supply a great service to the campus community providing Safe walks on campus when requested. (Photo: UBC Emergency First Response Team October 2019) See more
