UBC Film Society 01.02.2021

The Vancouver International Film Festival is offering $2 off a ticket for the online screening of "The World is Bright" to 10 members of the UBC Film Society residing in British Columbia! The film premiered at VIFF 2019 and won the 2019 Sea to Sky Award and Emerging Canadian Filmmaker Award at HotDocs 2020. It will be available to stream on VIFF Connect (connect.viff.org) until February 11 (11:59pm PST). Please fill out this Google Form: https://forms.gle/T1ds96pwZaXHGLET6 i...f you would like the UBC Film Society to send you the discount code for the online screening of the movie "The World is Bright". The discount codes will be emailed to the first 10 eligible respondents on a first-come-first-serve basis. Please note that VIFF Connect online films can be viewed in British Columbia only. Pavan (pronounced Pav-in) Moondi is a writer/director originally from Toronto and currently based in Los Angeles. He has written and directed three critically-acclaimed feature films: EVERYDAY IS LIKE SUNDAY (2013), DIAMOND TONGUES (2015), and SUNDOWNERS (2017). The latter of which co-stars comedian Tim Heidecker, was financed by Telefilm Canada and shot primarily in Santa Marta, Colombia. The film was named one of The Globe and Mail's Top Ten Canadian Films of 2017. Pavan’s previous film, DIAMOND TONGUES, premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival to critical acclaim while garnering a Canadian Screen Award nomination for its first-time actress star, Leah Fay Goldstein of the band JULY TALK. Both films are streaming on Amazon Prime in the US and CBC Gem in Canada. Pavan has also worked in television: in 2016 he directed all 8 episodes of a CBC TV single camera sitcom, FOUR IN THE MORNING, and worked in the writers’ room for the Emmy Award-nominated 5th season of the hit CBC/PopTV series, SCHITT’S CREEK, starring Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy. The UBC Film Society is back with our final #NormSelects interview for this semester with director/writer/et al Elvira Lind! This Zoom interview will take place on November 28th at 6pm PST / 9pm EST. This event will be also live-streamed on Saturday November 28th, 2020 at 6PM PST/9PM EST. Born in 1981 in Copenhagen, Elvira Lind graduated from School of Media and Creative Arts in Cape Town in 2006 majoring in documentary film. She has worked within that field since directing and shooting documentaries of various lengths for TV, cinema and web on 4 different continents. In 2020 she premiered her first fiction project, a 32 min short film she wrote and directed. The film was sold to Topic and was invited to various festivals including Telluride, Hollyshorts and Tribeca FF. Elvira's feature doc BOBBI JENE premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2017 where it won all awards in its category including Best Feature documentary, best editing and best Cinematography. The film had theatrical release in US, Spain and Scandinavia. Elvira's first documentary feature Songs for Alexis premiered in Toronto at HOT DOCS in 2014 and screened and competed at a long list of international festivals. Her 8 part documentary TV series "Twiz and Tuck" was bought by VICELAND and launched in 2017. Elvira now lives and works out of New York. Want to stay tuned for more updates?
