September 30 is Orange Shirt Day, a day to recognize the residential school experience, to honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and t...o commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. In 2019, guided by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, we introduced a training program to provide staff and volunteers with a new level of knowledge and understanding of Indigenous histories, worldviews and perspectives. https://www.orangeshirtday.org

For Science Literacy Week (September 21 to 27), each day, Let's Talk Science Outreach volunteers will read a story online and lead a related hands-on activity to convey the excitement and influence of STEM in our everyday lives! Follow along at home or in class. There are stories for ages 4-14 and some are on the weekend for families. You'll need to gather a few super easy materials or print a worksheet to do the activity. https://letstalkscience.ca//science-literacy-week-lets-tal

What does a scientist look like? We are screening "Picture a Scientist" to raise awareness of gender inequality in academia! Watch anywhere, any time Sept 9-11. More info and sign up here: https://forms.gle/d1QS1ahAztW1UtCH6... Film synopsis: "Picture a Scientist" chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all. "Picture a Scientist" was an official selection of the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film’s virtual theatrical run reached 47 theaters across the USA in June 2020, and raised money for two organizations advancing women of color in STEM.
