When whales die, they sink to the ocean floor and all the carbon that is stored in their enormous bodies is transferred from surface waters to the deep sea, where it remains for centuries or more.

Almost no #fisheries are truly #sustainable, says #DanielPauly. It’s so bad, he says. Sustainable is not a reliable term anymore. So many fisheries have been reduced to a small fraction of what they once were. You can ‘sustainably’ #fish them at that diminished level, but they really need to be rebuilt to support the ecosystem. According to a number of papers published by leading scientists, the agencies that certify fisheries are deeply flawed, and many fish that have the sustainable label applied to them are anything but. https://www.outsideonline.com//plant-based-fish-seafood-go via Outside Magazine Sea Around Us

The fish numbers have increased in recent years, reaching into the hundreds of thousands, and now the First Nation fears that at any moment Fisheries and Oceans Canada could reopen the commercial fishery and start the destructive cycle all over again. They, along with scientists, are skeptical that the ecosystem can support the scale of fishing it once did. It’s not too far from where it was, but it may never be what it was again, says Dr. Brian Hunt, a biological oceanographer at the University of British Columbia who studies that all-important timing. The ocean is just changing so dramatically that we may never get back to the productivity that we’d want to see.

Commercial marina proposed for Union Bay, bringing up questions about the safety of dredging due to #contamination. Report from UBC marine researcher Dr. Juan Jose Alava that notes the presence of materials such as copper, lead, zinc, cadmium, mercury and aluminum, among others. Most of these contaminants are toxic and some of them can bioaccumulate and biomagnify in the nearshore benthic and pelagic food webs with critical implications for public health and food safety for... coastal communities, heavily dependent on traditional seafoods, he writes. https://www.comoxvalleyrecord.com//commercial-marina-agai/ via CV Record #pollution

In order to help these whales, we need to know more about them how they hunt, and where their food is, explains Andrew Trites , project lead and director of the Marine Mammal Research Unit UBC (MMRU).
