The Vancouver Opera family is saddened by the news of the sudden passing of Carmen Garcia. Carmen was Vancouver Opera’s long-standing Head of Make-Up since 1986... and had worked for VO in the make-up department since 1978. Carmen not only worked for VO but was also part of the team that provided such professionalism and encouragement to the young singers in the UBC Opera program. Carmen, Elke Englicht (Head of Wigs and Hair), and Parvin Mirhady (Head of Costumes) have been working on UBC shows providing a professional level of Costumes, Wigs and Makeup to the young singers for many years. Our sincere condolences go out to her husband Chris, himself a seasoned member of the Vancouver Opera Chorus, her son and her two grandchildren. Later this spring, we hope, if conditions permit, to get together with our colleagues at UBC Opera to honour Carmen. Carmen’s charities of choice are Vancouver Opera, BC Children’s Hospital and UBC Opera. To donate to Vancouver Opera in Carmen’s memory, please call 604-682-2871 ext. 0, or to choose the other charities, please donate to them directly. https://www.vancouveropera.ca//vancouver-opera-remembers-/ Photo of Carmen applying makeup to Caitlin Wood, Soprano during 2017's The Marriage of Figaro, taken by Emily Cooper.
