The PCU has been contacted by the Project Coordinator for the COVID-19 Canada Student Health Literacy Survey to bring you this opportunity: "On July 1st, 2020, we launched an online bilingual survey on health literacy in the context of COVID-19, aimed at all post-secondary students across Canada. The goal is to better understand how post-secondary students are accessing health information during the pandemic, and the perceived impact of COVID-19 on their stress level and ove...rall wellbeing. Thousands of students around the world are participating as this is an initiative of the International Health Literacy Consortium. For more information, see: https://covid-hl.eu/. The study in Canada is led by Dr. Erica Di Ruggiero at the University of Torontos Dalla Lana School of Public Health and Paola Ardiles at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Simon Fraser University. This survey will be open until August 31st, 2020. We have obtained ethics approval at both institutions." Hi PCU Members! Graduate students in psychology programs across Canada have come together to create an open letter to the Canadian Psychology Association (CPA) calling for a time-bound, actionable plan to address anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism, police violence against Black, Indigenous, and people of colour (BIPOC), and the systemic racism that continues to endanger the well-being of BIPOC in Canada. The letter also addresses long-standing equity and diversity concerns... that are pervasive across all domains of psychology, including science, practice, and education. It specifically discusses some barriers in the application process to graduate school that are faced by BIPOC undergraduate students. Please consider reading, signing, and sharing the letter: https://bit.ly/CPALetter. This is a working document, so any feedback is also appreciated! You can contact [email protected] with comments or questions. See more

An update from the department. Stay safe and have a great weekend!
Hello PCU members and happy Thursday! As you know today the fall/winter 2020/2021 course schedules were released. We would like to provide some suggestions and advice. Hopefully this can provide assistance in making a schedule that fits your learning needs and help with picking which courses to take. If you have any suggestions or advice of your own that you have learned from your experience while completing your degree, please feel free to comment! To clarify: these are ...merely opinions and we do not intend to force other student to share these views. IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE HONOURS PROGRAM IN PSYCHOLOGY: As previously mentioned, PSYO 372 and its corresponding lab will only be available as an in-...person course in Term 1 of the upcoming 2020 academic year. Please note, PSYO 373 will also only be offered in-person in Term 2. This decision was not taken lightly; rather it was made after discussing pedagogical issues with the professors and teaching assistants who deliver these courses and labs. We decided that these courses and their labs could not be delivered adequately online. Both PSYO 372 and PSYO 373 are very competitive to get into. Only 35 students are permitted into PSYO 372. When enrolment opens for the 2020 academic year, all those interested in taking PSYO 372 in-person are asked to register on the waitlist for the course. When all the registration dates have passed, those individuals who registered on the waitlist are then rank-ordered based on their overall Psychology-specific GPA, calculated using all Psychology grades on record with UBC. The top 35 ranked students are then registered into PSYO 372. Under normal circumstances, only those individuals who have successfully completed PSYO 372 can start their honours thesis research and enroll in PSYO 490. We appreciate that some of you who were planning to take PSYO 372 and PSYO 373 this upcoming year will not be returning to the Okanagan because of COVID-19 and its impact on UBCs course scheduling; consequently, you will not be able to take PSYO 372 and PSYO 373 this year as planned. Those impacted individuals should send an email to Marla MacDonald at [email protected] notifying her of this situation. If any of those individuals who contacted Marla are successfully admitted into PSYO 372 in Term 1 of the 2021 academic year, then we will permit those students to enrol in PSYO 490 and start their honours research concurrently while taking PSYO 372 in Term 1 of 2021. We are making this exception for that academic year only to ensure that any potential honours students that are not residing in the Okanagan this upcoming year will be able to graduate with an honours degree without any delays. Please share this notice with those who may be interested in this information.
