Vancouver City Council will soon be voting on the City's 2021 Budget. It's time to Defund the Police and to Refund Our Communities. The UBC Social Justice Cent...re has compiled an excellent resource sheet for anyone who wishes to write a letter to the Mayor and city councillors on this important subject: rb.gy/nmttjf For more background, you can read the DSV's statement on the VPD's refusal to take even a 1% budget cut earlier this year: https://www.democraticsocialistsyvr.ca//solidarity-against
ACTION NEEDED! Write To Council and Demand Steps Towards Defunding the VPD in the 2021 city budget! Last July, Vancouver City Council unanimously passed a motion to support community-led safety initiatives, thanks to a record-breaking 395 speakers, hundreds of letters from constituents, and the work of Black- and Indigenous-led organizations. The current proposed city budget allocates $0 to implement council's motion to deprioritize policing. ... Cops and their allies have started an email campaign, to cut funding from our efforts to #DefundtheVPD -- and we can't let them win. We are hoping that you can spare a few minutes to send an email using the template provided here: https://docs.google.com//1Jwj2hfAcAidYdfGxwEYoJAY5_0/edit Thank you for your support and commitment to justice in our city. In solidarity and love, UBC Social Justice Centre

What You Need to Know About Vacancy Control in Vancouver: Vacancy control is a form of rent control that is linked to a unit rather than a tenant. This means that the landlord will be restricted in the amount they can raise the rent between tenancies, and can decrease their desire to evict tenants on illegitimate grounds for capital gain. With vacancy control put in place we can hopefully see long term trends of homelessness decrease. Successful vacancy control will contrib...ute to lower and more affordable rents, and longer tenure by tenants in comparison to non-vacancy-controlled areas. The lack of vacancy control in Vancouver has mean that prices have sky rocketed, and tenants are at risk. So what can we do??? Action 1: Email or call members of Vancouver City Council or the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing to voice your concerns Action 2: Check out your local candidates position on Vacancy Control in Vancouver and vote for parties who include tenant protection in their platforms Action 3: Spread the word about the importance of affordable rent with friends and neighbours.
