Great example of why our new Forest Bioeconomy Sciences & Technology Degree program is so important! This video was created by the Secretariat of the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) to demonstrate the linkages between sustainable wood energy and forest landscape restoration (FLR) and how together they can contribute towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. #bioeconomy #bioenergy #sustainabiltiy #wood #ubcwood

Join us in recognizing Orange Shirt Day today. More than 150,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit children attended Indian residential schools in Canada between the late 1800s and 1996. These schools were operated by the Canadian government and church organizations and were part of Canada’s official policy that aimed to eliminate Indigenous Peoples’ languages and cultures and, through assimilation, cause them to cease to exist as distinct peoples. It is estimated that between four to six thousand children died at residential schools. Orange Shirt Day was created as an opportunity to discuss the effects of residential schools and their legacy. It honours the experiences of Indigenous Peoples, celebrates resilience and affirms a commitment that every child matters.

Learn about careers within Wood Products Processing! The Forestry Tri-Mentoring Program matches students with a mentor working in a career field they’re interested in learning more about, and another student in their program. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about different career paths, to build your network, and get valuable advice. For students in 3rd and 4th year, this is also a great opportunity to give back by mentoring students in their first or second year of your program. The program will be run online this year, and the deadline to apply is Monday, September 28th. tinyurl.com/forestrymentor

A big welcome to the Wood Products Processing Students of 2020/21! We may have a modified teaching mode thanks to this global pandemic, but we are not going to be deterred from having an awesome year! For those that don’t know me, my name is Chris Gaston and I specialize in marketing and economics. With a background managing a team at FPInnovations for over two decades, these days I focus more on small and medium forest enterprises, including First Nations. For the new s...tudents, you will see me in WOOD 120, and for the 3ed/4th year students in WOOD 365 and WOOD 499. My plan for this year is to be as synchronous as possible, by using interactive Zoom sessions and even virtual-group projects. So have fun getting settled into this new way of learning, and I look forward to interacting with you all. #ubcwood #ubcforestry #ubc #meetourubcwoodfaculty #welcomestudents

Hello new and returning students! My name is Qingshi Tu and I would like to welcome you to the Faculty of Forestry at UBC. I’m an Assistant Professor at Wood Science and will be teaching WOOD 491 and BEST 202 in Term 2. WOOD 491 will provide you with the knowledge necessary for assessing environmental impacts from the management of materials, energy use, waste treatment associated with an industrial facility. Through BEST 202, you will gain insights regarding energy harvesti...ng, conversion, delivery, consumption and associated sustainability implications. Although there are still uncertainties associated with this pandemic, I will strive to offer you an engaging learning experience by delivering the courses through well-balanced asynchronous and synchronous sessions. I look forward to meeting you in the near future and hope you will enjoy being part of the inspiring UBC community. #ubcwood #ubcforestry #ubc #meetourubcwoodfaculty #welcomestudents #ubcbest

When the pandemic didn’t allow students on campus, our instructor, Vincent Leung, made sure their projects were still completed! Here he is putting together a fishelf for a group of students #ubcwood #wood #studentproject

UBC Wood Science 29.05.2020

Hello everyone! Welcome to the Wood Products Processing program! My name is Vincent Leung, and I am one of the instructors in the Department of Wood Science who specialized in the secondary manufacturing and CAD/CAM of wood products. I teach WOOD 356 in Term 1, WOOD 292 & WOOD 482 in Term 2, and WOOD 305 in the summer term. Most of my classes are related to the machinery in the CAWP Machine lab. Therefore, the Machine Lab is part of my classroom/lecture hall/laboratory. Howe...ver, due to the change of online teaching, we have to remove the hands-on components and emphasize course material using multimedia (videos, pictures, and manuals) as we do not have access to the physical machinery in CAWP. Despite that, all the courses will still be great. Looking forward to seeing you all! #ubcwood #ubcforestry #ubc #meetourubcwoodfaculty #welcomestudents
