Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, our Certified Dental Assistant students are showing resilience and dedication to their craft. With proper PPE and distance between them, students are still coming to campus and learning in a hands-on format in our state-of-the-art dental clinic. In the beginning, I was nervous about how things were going to unfold. Now, I’ve realized that being in this course during a pandemic is preparing us even more for our careers, remarks current student Chloe Pass. All the measures that are being taken at UFV have made me feel extremely safe and supported. UFV-trained Certified Dental Assistant graduates are highly sought after by local employers who trust UFV for quality and reputation. In only 10-months, you can start your career as a health professional with accredited, hands-on experience from the University of the Fraser Valley. With a strong background in theory and practice, being a certified dental assistant means you are prepared to complete a national board exam, register with the College of Dental Surgeons of BC, and join a dynamic workforce.

Interprofessional opportunities can be hard to come by during a global pandemic, but this didn’t stop a collaboration between UFV nursing students and UBC medical residents. In mid-November, semester 6 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students welcomed UBC medical residents to engage in a simulation that focused on interprofessional collaboration for safe patient care. With the challenges of COVID and bringing two programs from different institutions together, I am thrilled that nothing prevented us from being able to offer this important learning experience," says UFV nursing professor Lee-Anne Stephen.

Adrienne Chan and Satwinder Kaur Bains are weary anti-racism advocates. Both have dedicated decades of their personal and professional lives to the cause. But t...hey carry on, because it’s a cause that they believe in to the core of their being. And they’d like your help. Working against racism has been a lifelong process for me, since the first time I was called a derogatory name on the schoolground because of my Chinese heritage, says Chan, professor emeritus in the School of Social Work and Human Services. It is emotional labour, adds Bains, director of the South Asian Studies Institute. But it’s work that we have to engage in. I feel like I’ve walked a million miles in this journey but sometimes also like we’ve only gained two inches. Both Chan and Bains are long-time UFV faculty members and were among the founders of UFV’s Race and Anti-Racism Network (RAN), a group of faculty, staff, and students who work to promote anti-racism activities and initiatives.
