The restrictions required to protect the vulnerable population at Providence Manor during the pandemic resulted in family members and friends being unable to visit their loved ones for many months. Staff work hard to provide connections with residents, but their remarkable efforts to care for and entertain the residents often go unseen. Thankfully, donations from families, friends and the wider community have acknowledged the wonderful work the staff continue to do. The mos...t uplifting thing during the pandemic for me has been the resilience of our staff, says Krystal Mack, Administrator at Providence Manor. Their ongoing commitment to the residents has really brought to the forefront how much love there is here. However, donations have been very important for morale and acknowledging that our staff are still on the front line. So they’re very thankful for being remembered by these generous contributions. Cathy Dunne (pictured) has age-related macular degeneration. It is a chronic eye condition inherited through genetics that may get worse over time. The disease can cause permanent vision loss. She also has arthritis in her spine, which causes severe pain that limits her mobility. I spent my whole career in health care and I know how desperately community funds are required for services that are (either) not funded or (not) fully funded by our healthcare system in Ontario, s...ays Cathy, a grateful patient. The Chronic Pain Care program is one example and it’s very dear to my heart. I wouldn’t have any kind of quality of life without it. The University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF) is one of the main charities that I support and I foresee myself continuing to do so. I have been helped, as have so many people that I know of in the community, by various programs funded by UHKF. Thanks to a very generous donation from Ken and Nancy Sedgewick, University Hospitals Kingston Foundation donors, Kingston Health Sciences Centre’s Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario (CCSEO) now offers a more effective treatment to patients with cancer. Many patients suffer from spinal metastasis, a condition in which tumours grow along the vertebrae as a result of cancer cells travelling around the body. These tumours are often found in patients with breast, prostate or l...ung cancer and can significantly worsen quality of life. Ken and Nancy’s incredible donation has brought Spinal Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) to our region. SBRT uses a specially-designed platform to ensure patients are completely immobilized during treatment. Combined with extremely advanced imaging, the tumours can now be targeted by radiation therapy with unparalleled precision, reducing risk to surrounding tissues and organs. This therapy helps to eradicate tumours more quickly, with fewer side effects for patients. Being able to offer this treatment locally allows the patient to take less time off work, stay closer to the comforts of home, and save money on the expense of travelling, says Dr. Fabio Ynoe de Moraes, a Radiation Oncologist at the CCSEO (pictured). These are some real barriers to care that are significantly reduced now that we have this equipment in Kingston. Last year, the Matyas and Cowell families raised funds through the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation in support of Kingston Health Sciences Centre's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). In March 2017, Athena Cowell was born at 25 weeks gestation weighing only 2lbs., 2oz. Athena, spent her first months in KHSC’s NICU and the family is very grateful for the care and expertise the family received. Providence Care Hospital was honoured this year when they received an unexpected donation in support of palliative care. John Vogelzang’s mother and father, the late Peter and Sylvia Vogelzang (pictured) had both received care there. Following his father’s wishes and on behalf of the Vogelzang Charitable Foundation, John made a gift of $100,000 to support palliative care at Providence Care Hospital. The legacy provided to Providence Continuing Care Centre, Palliative Care... Unit, was given by the Vogelzang Charitable Foundation in appreciation for the excellent care, and compassion from the staff that my father and mother received while in their care, says John Vogelzang. From the family’s perspective, it was important that they were treated respectfully during the last months of life, John continues. The thoughtfulness of the staff, communication and guidance with the family in all aspects of his care was valued during this difficult time. As a consequence of this, the donation was made to pay forward the gratefulness Peter and Sylvia, as well as our family, felt. Last year Jordane’s wife, Jillian, was diagnosed with stage 3c colorectal cancer. Shortly after Jillian's diagnosis, Jordane found a new-found passion for cycling, and created the fundraiser, Jillian’s Road, to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. This past September, Jordane, and his friends and family cycled in the first-annual Jillian’s Road, cycling from Prince Edward County to Kingston. They exceeded their fundraising goal and raised $7,450 benefitting the Canc...er Centre of Southeastern Ontario. Since then, they have seen even more support. We are excited to announce they have raised a total of $8,450! This fundraiser is one example of our community coming together to transform health care in Kingston. Thank YOU! The UHKF Women’s Giving Circle (WGC) is a group of women who come together to support ground-breaking medical research at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and Providence Care. Since allocating their first grants in 2013, the WGC has raised almost $300,000 for research projects in Kingston. These grants fund a diverse range of areas, including the detection of cancers in aging adults, the control of salmonella infections, and individually tailored treatments to fight depression.... The 2019 grant was for one of the most exciting projects to date. The WGC granted $40,000 to Dr. D. J. Cook, a KHSC neurosurgeon, who is developing the ArcheOptix handheld scanner. This device can scan a patient’s brain with a simple swipe, potentially detecting brain bleeds before they become life-threatening. The scanner is a portable device. This means patients can be assessed remotely, thereby eliminating the need to come to the hospital for a CT scan. It has the potential to be a truly revolutionary piece of equipment. Colton, 10 -years-old, reads above grade level and plays numerous different sports with no long-term health effects from being born 15 weeks early. He also uses his birthdays and other occasions to raise funds and awareness for the NICU that saved his life. We’re so very thankful for the amazing care we received in the NICU and are committed to ensuring that support for this care continues in Kingston, says Kate, Colton's mom. We’re happy to do our part and we’ve instilled... in Colton an awareness to give back. He thinks it’s ‘cool’ he’s been able to help the babies in the hospital. Each January, Colton invites his class, hockey team, and family friends, to the Invista Centre for his birthday. Attracting more than 150 people, the family rents the ice for hockey and open skating, kindly asking everyone to donate to the NICU instead of bringing gifts. In the last six years I think he has raised more than 7 thousand dollars, says Kate. Obviously at 4- or 5-years-old it was our influence but it was such a great turnout that we decided to make it an annual thing. He’s always so excited to have that many people at his birthday. In 2019, thanks to a generous donor, Providence Care’s Providence Manor was able to purchase the ABBY System. This amazing piece of equipment uses touch screen technology to allow residents living with dementia to participate in activities they were previously unable to do. The residents can pet a furry cat, watch TV, choose radio stations, play games and even drive a car. I cannot say enough about the benefits that we have seen with the ABBY, says Danielle Preston, outgoing Recreation and Volunteer Services Coordinator at Providence Manor. Providing our residents with this kind of engagement, and giving families and visitors opportunities to experience meaningful visits, is literally everything that we are here to do. The following is an update from UHKF's President and CEO, Tom Zsolnay: I hope that everyone has enjoyed their summer. As we head into the colder months, I wanted to provide you with an update on what is known about the second wave of the pandemic, which we are now in. The KHSC lab has been very busy processing between 1000 and 1500 tests per day. KFL&A currently has 24 active cases, H& PE has four and LGL has 17, but overall community prevalence remains low. The majority of... cases in Kingston are Queen’s students and as of right now it is not considered a widespread community outbreak because it is contained within a limited cluster. Ontario has reported an average of over 500 new cases over the last three days. 61% of those are under age 40, 32% in the 40 to 70 age range and roughly 5% over 70. Modeling is still predicting that we’ll be at 1000 new cases per day by mid-month. Although we continue to do well in our region, it is important for all of us to continue following public health guidelines avoid large gatherings, maintain physical distancing, wear a mask when distancing is a challenge and wash hands often. Focus Personal Fitness Studio had to get creative after the cancellation of its annual Thousand Islands Gran Fondo cycling event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They created a replacement event, challenging the cycling community to a 1000 km ride. From this event, they raised $1,397.91! There were 32 participants in the challenge ride, 23 of which cycled at least 1000 km in August. From every registration, $10 was donated to UHKF. Today is the last day of the Tim Hortons #SmileCookie campaign! If you’ve purchased a Smile Cookie this week, thank you. With your support, you’re helping our tiniest patients thrive just like Spencer-Elizabeth! Spencer-Elizabeth was born at twenty-six weeks and six days on November 2, 2015, by Caesarean section, says Jessica Hutchings, Spencer-Elizabeth’s mother. She weighed one pound four ounces. I wasn’t able to see her for the first 24-hours, and it marked the beginn...ing of a four-month stay in the NICU. We are so thankful because we know without the NICU staff, supports and donors, Spencer-Elizabeth wouldn’t be here today. Thank you #ygk community! Kingston Health Sciences Centre
