Ivana Kupala (Christian Feast of St. John the Baptist) is celebrated on the night of July 6-7. The celebration relates to the summer solstice when nights are the shortest and includes a number of Slavic rituals. Kupala traditions predate Christianity. Due to the popularity of pagan celebrations, Ivana Kupala was simply accepted and reestablished as a native Christian tradition intertwined with local folklore. On Ivana Kupala, young people jump over bonfire flames in a ritual ...test of bravery and faith. If a couple fail to complete the jump while holding hands, they are destined to separate. If however they make it over the fire while holding hands, they will be together forever! Young girls float candle-lit flower wreaths on rivers and attempt to guess what the future holds in store from the flow patterns made by the wreaths. Young men try to seize the wreaths, hoping to capture the interest of a particular young woman. There is an ancient belief that Ivana Kupala Eve is the only time when ferns bloom (paporot). Prosperity, luck, and strength befall on whoever finds a fern flower. Therefore, everyone is said to roam through the forests in search of magical herbs especially the elusive fern flower!
