Interesting research on round bales and using feeders: With winter upon us, many horse folks turn to properly put up and stored round bales to provide forage for their horses. Recent research done at the University of Minnesota shows that when round bales are fed in a feeder, horses consume 2% - 2.4% of their body weight in hay. When round bales are fed with no feeder, horses only consume 1/3% of their body weight. The study also showed that horses wasted 60% of the hay when ...fed without a feeder and that in most cases the cost of the feeder was repaid in 20 months just by reducing waste. (Source: Journal of Animal Science, Oct. 2011) Research also recommends that bales be placed on their side - not the flat top/bottom. Placing bales on their round side regulates feeding better as it reduces gorging and maintains better bale quality by causing any moisture to roll down the outside of the round instead of directly into the middle of the bale. Placing bales this way also reduces mud and ground moisture from entering and spoiling the bale. NOTE: Hay Bales can be placed by a Tractor into our feeders/rings or the ring/feeder can be lifted over the bale - no tractor needed.
Great feedback from a new customer We have now educated her on the proper way to put bales in the ring - we recommend that bales be put on their round side - this makes round bales last longer and wicks water off as the layers are tight and the water rolls down the sides instead of into the bale. Putting bales on their sides also reduces mud and ground moisture from ruining hay. This ring was a gift from a friend. I had recommended the ring size and was very pleased to help with this surprise.

good information about feeders. Feeding hay safely is so important. Also paying attention to the condition of your feeder. Wood feeders made with nails and screws can easily come apart exposing your horse to cuts. Other feeders may split, crack, rust or promote mold and dust collection if there is not enough air flow. - for more information on our feeders go to www.prospectequinefarms.com/hayfeeders.htm
