Examining the ways that muskeg and its reclamation appear in Indigenous, government and scientific discourses is the focus of UNBC's first Anthropology in Our Backyards series talk Thursday afternoon, Nov. 26 from 1 - 2:30 p.m. Oil sands companies in northern Alberta are required to reclaim land disturbed by their extractive activities. Titled Growing [With] Muskeg: Oil Sands Reclamation and Healing, Dr. Tara Joly, an assistant professor at UNBC’s Department of Anthropology, ...will discuss the social and cultural context for the creation of these reclaimed landscapes. Reclaimed land is meant to resemble a naturally-occurring boreal forest, but reclamation has been criticized for ‘desertifying’ a landscape that, before extraction, consisted largely of muskeg (peatlands). Dr. Joly’s public online lecture is open to everyone. You can register for it at: https://bit.ly/anthropology-in-our-backyard #ThisIsUNBC #Anthropology See more

We're happy to welcome Rahim Somani, who spent more than a decade overseeing the finance and operations at the University of Central Asia, has joined UNBC as our next Vice-President, Finance and Administration. Somani began his new role at UNBC on Nov. 2. We are fortunate to have attracted such a strong candidate with a breadth of skills and experience and I have no doubt that he will provide the strategic thinking and leadership needed from those on our senior administration team, said Dr. Geoff Payne, UNBC’s interim president and chancellor.
