If you have some time tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon, attend this free cultural competency workshop at UNBC. The deadline to sign up is today. Cultural Competency Workshop As part of our Culture Days event at UNBC, the Student Life Office in partnership with International Education is hosting an educational workshop on raising our levels of cultural competency. With the rapid increase in globalization, the need to understand the communication styles of other cultures is becomi...ng a necessary part of our school, work and everyday life. This is a FREE two hour introductory workshop designed to increase your ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures. The workshop will focus specifically on exploring the ‘rules’ of communication within various cultures. Participants will walk away with increased knowledge about communication styles. Through group activities and role playing exercises, participants will learn from each other the appropriate ways to communicate. We will also discuss strategies for handling situations when communication goes wrong. The format of the workshop is participatory with individual and group exercises. Participants will be expected to share information about their cultural ‘rules’ of communication with others so we can all learn about this topic from each other. Those who participate in the workshop will be awarded a Certificate of Participation. Workshop Details When: Tuesday, March 11, 2014 Where: room 6-205/211 Time: 2:30pm-4:30pm Supplies: Please bring a pen or pencil with you. All other supplies will be provided. Registration You must register for this workshop in advance. Please send an email to [email protected] with your full name, student number, home country and email address. Information about the workshop may be found at: http://apecs.is/apecs-meetings-a-even//icass-2014/workshop. APECS has kindly agreed to open this workshop to UNBC graduate students as well. UNBC graduate students ne...ed to register to attend, but there is no cost involved in registration. Most of the topics covered will deal with issues useful to graduate students working on topics anywhere in the world (even if examples are likely to be drawn from the Arctic/Polar regions): How to successfully manage your research project Incorporating Traditional Knowledge into your research/science ethics Informing policy and policy makers Successful proposal writing and funding your research
