On December 6, 1989 a man entered a classroom at École Polytechnique and after asking the men in the classroom to leave, murdered 14 young women, simply because of their gender. Many of these women were engineering students. This happened 31 years ago but gender based violence is still happening in our country. December 6 now marks the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This day is used to reflect on the lives lost due to violence against women as well as to take action, educating everyone on this issue. You can read more about how UNB is honouring this day here: https://bit.ly/37F41Tp

Today we remember Canada’s veterans and those who are currently serving, and we thank them for their service and sacrifice. For some Canadians, Remembrance Day gives an opportunity to reflect on their own experiences and connections. Second year mechanical engineering student, Barakat Alabbas, arrived in Canada from a Jordan refugee camp in 2016. Barakat, his parents, and two of his siblings are from Syria but were forced to leave their country due to war. Read more about Barakat’s story: https://bit.ly/35bAQHs

Happy Friday everyone (only one more until reading week)! This weeks #facultyfriday is someone many of you know well, the one, the only, Ben Newling! Dr Newling is currently one of the professors for PHYS 1081 (a course we are all familiar with). He says this course is important to make sure that all specializations of science and engineering have the same understanding of the basic concepts outlined in the course.... We asked if he had any advice for students, and he did not disappoint. He says that an engineering degree is a large undertaking, and that students should recognize that and be careful not to overwhelm themselves. It is important to study things that interest you, even if they seem tricky, because the interest will help you through the tricky parts. When you’re studying, he says to aim for a deep understanding of the material; the marks will follow. He also recommends Stephen Chew’s videos for studying advice. Last but certainly not least, wear a helmet. #unbengineering #unbphysics #wearahelmet

Alexandre Banks is a third year Electrical and Computer Engineering student at UNB and completed a 16-week research internship at the UNB Institute of Biomedical Engineering. In this position he worked under principle investigator Dr. Jon Sensinger and lead a project that coupled Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) with a model for stroke rehabilitation to determine optimal treatments for individuals throughout the continuum of care. Throughout his internship, he had ...the opportunity to present in front of neurosurgeons and rehabilitation specialists at a research conference in Nova Scotia . He enjoyed the technical aspects of his job; however, the highlight of his internship was meeting the wonderful staff and students at the IBME and working in the welcoming and diverse atmosphere of the institute. Congratulations on an amazing internship Alex!!
