Safety is the most important issue during this Covid-19 outbreak. With huge respect to the professionals fighting, and usually succeeding, in making long term c...are facilities safe for their residents during this horrible pandemic, Long term care facilities have been the focus of media attention during this terrible pandemic, with many unfortunate and tragic deaths In older long term care facilities (LTC), large numbers of frail seniors live tightly together in compact, very small areas (in Ontario, four persons, and two persons to a room is not uncommon), These virtually always have combined ventilation systems, and communal shared dining rooms, And a relatively large number of staff, coming and going, (there should be close to one staff member per suite in LTC, ie. almost 150 staff in a 150 bed facility) and often transitioning and changing staffing, and, unfortunately, including working at more than site, And chronic under funding of staff pay, and numbers of staff on site, by provincial governments (especially in Ontario), and other provinces, make owning and managing long term care facilities extremely challenging. I believe, once there is time to review outcomes after this hopefully once in a life time event abates, residential models of seniors living will prove to be safer than older institutional facilities. Newer apartments with individual ventilation systems, sprinkler systems for fire safety, and 2 hour fire rated concrete block firewalls to enable horizontal egress, or exiting, for persons with walkers or wheel chairs, in my opinion, are safe for seniors. Ideally, they are situated in a walkable mixed use Urban Village design, with the number of units to offer site based home care, retail & professional services, and socialization opportunities. We are most grateful to say, that due to the early creation and adoption of tight building access protocols, and the diligent support of our excellent Executive Directors and their professional staff, and the incredible discipline of our Residents; We have had, to date, no cases of Covid, in our Christenson retirement communities. And, recent telephone conversations that I have had with fellow Alberta private residential style seniors operation owners and managers indicates, albeit anecdotally, very low, if not negligible, cases of Covid diagnosis, fortunately. We all pray that this does not change. Plus, AHS has just recently created a list of Alberta facilities with identified outbreaks, being 2 or more cases of Covid (see Global News). Read below how Christenson Communities is moving aggressively to new site based Home Care models in community based care. Based upon our experience, this model provides both a high level of safety, and a greater range of choices, keeping couples living together, longer. We call this new program Custom Supportive Living (CSL). Http://www.cdlhomes.com/downlo/news/ChristensonHomeCare.pdf
