Students at UNISUS Basketball Academy (UBA) will become well versed in their fundamental principles guiding them to their full potential. The coaching team is led by Spencer McKay with Lake City Basketball, who played on Canada’s National Basketball Team for 10 years and finished his international playing career with 85 official caps. McKay is a Level 4 Coach, and was the Lead Assistant Coach for the UBC Thunderbirds from 2013-2018, before returning home to the South Okan...agan. The UBA is not only led by one of the most knowledgeable and experienced coaches in the country, it gives our students the chance to follow their passion for basketball and become strong leaders on and off the court. This is not a drill This is Outdoor Education Last week our Senior Classes practiced their fire starting skills. They were tasked with starting fires 3 ways: 1: using accelerant on gauze, 2: using gauze without accelerant,... 3: and using natural foraged fuel. We saw students working as a team, focused and determined to complete the task. It’s no wonder why, when the reward is so hot In our Outdoor Education program UNISUS students learn self reliance, environmental stewardship, leadership, and collaboration and teamwork skills. Students observe, measure, record and assess within natural and urban surroundings. Its real-life, hands-on approach significantly broadens and deepens learning leading to more engagement and enthusiasm, increased proficiency in language skills as well as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and improved skills in critical thinking. In our ever present mission of fostering global minded scholars, the students at UNISUS joined in this week’s Día De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations by making a school ofrenda, where students placed colourful and traditional decorations. Ms Maria, originally from Mexico, shared some of her family’s traditions, and spoke about the importance of the ofrenda being symmetrical and balanced. Ms Maria spoke about the cultural significance of Día De Los Muertos to her anc...estors. She believes in the importance of cultural enrichment for the students, and was so happy to share this holiday with our UNISUS community. Among other traditional decorations, UNISUS students made Calaveras (sugar skulls). Made from a sweet paste called alfeñique, sugar skulls are an ancient and enduring Día De Los Muertos ritual. #DiaDeMuertos #School2020 #UnisusEdu #PrivateSchool
