Listen to Nathalie’s story below. She was a client that called our Local United Way Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District office. *Photo and name changed to protect her identity* I am a single mother with two young daughters, working two part-time jobs to make ends meet. I had been doing ok, however I became ill and could not work for a week. With this loss of income, I got behind in paying my bills and my utilities were going to be disconnected. I was told to call the United W...ay Community Assistance Trust Program; the staff at this program helped me with the payment of the utility bill and I was able to get back on track without having to worry my daughters would be going without things they need. This one-time help was exactly what I needed to get back on my feet. I am very grateful for the help and hope that United Way gave me Nathalie Giving Tuesday is quickly approaching consider giving on December 1st, 2020 to support people in our community like Nathalie. Join us in support of this global movement this giving season! #GivingTuesdayCA #Unignorable #ShowYourLocalLove

Giving Tuesday is just around the corner! Here is our story feature for today from a United Way Client. TW: Mental illness, Suicide. This is Anthony's story. *Name and photo changed to protect his identity* "When I was maybe 9 or 10, I was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). That led to other diagnoses: generalized anxiety, depression. My first job was working at McDonalds. I was viewed as difficult because I wouldn’t take out the trash. But it was because my ...OCD is germ-related, and it was really bad. I would shower up to 4 times a day. I had little social life. That was a hindrance on my growth as a person. It also made it difficult for me to get along with my family. They just kept shipping me off to different doctors. No one was listening to me. I really love my parents. They tried, but they were not cut out for it. My depression was so bad that it manifested as suicidal thoughts. By the time I was 18 it was way too much. I ended up leaving home. I would stay in the hospital or I’d go to a homeless shelter. Eventually, I was connected with a social worker through a program that’s supported by the United Way. She helped me get provincial disability support. I now volunteer with youth as a peer support. It really helps me to be able to help. All of a sudden, I’m not just a burden on society. And I work with my social worker one-on-one. It’s nice to know that these people care about me and they want me to succeed. That’s pretty powerful."Anthony Mental health is an #UNIGNORABLE issue, but help is available. If you or someone you love struggles with a mental illness, dial 211 to learn about community resources and programs that can help support them. A good meal has real power. It can bring people together, conjure happy memories and even, as it did for Alasdair, empower people to change their lives. When Al...asdair lost his job as a server, worries about where his next meal would come weren’t far from his mind. Share Alasdair’s story and help us improve the life of Canadians by giving to the GCWCC. https://bit.ly/34GQVDB
