the gallery's Summer newsletter is out, link here: https://www.unitedcontemporary.com/news. In it you will see two amazing editioned prints that @m.e.g.h.a.n.p....r.i.c.e is selling, in support of the Black Legal Action Centre. The first round she donated to Canadian Civil Liberties. The other good news is that the gallery will be reopening on July 2nd with Net Worth+ by @gordon_shadrach. Plus personal notes from Gallery Assistant Chelsea and me, Gallery Director Burke. I am so honoured to be working these extraordinary people. #contemporaryart #exhibition #networth+ #toronto #painting #sculpture #printedobject #printmaking #timestheyareachangin @blacklegalactioncentre @cancivlib @ UNITED CONTEMPORARY See more

We are pleased to announce that the gallery will reopen on July 2nd with Net Worth+ by @gordon_shadrach See Gordon's recent post below. #Repost @gordon_shadrac...h Some good news to post! I am happy to report that my solo show at @unitedcontemporary will continue when the gallery reopens in early July. Net Worth+ will have also new work like this piece, Re-Purposed (1), which takes into account the effect on Black culture of the pandemic and political climate we are currently witnessing. This painting is part of a series I am currently working on. @unitedcontemporary is continuing to build bridges with the community by donating the gallery’s commission on all artwork sold from this show to the @niacentre. I will be posting more about my own commitment on supporting emerging Black artists soon. #gordonshadrach #networth #portraiture #blackartmatters #blackcanadianart #canadianartist #torontoartist #unitedcontemporarygallery to my nephew @keitajuma for posing. Couldn’t do this without you. See more

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the gallery is currently closed to the public. We plan to re-open with Net Worth + by Gordon Shadrach, an expanded version of his show that was cut short in March. Gallery Director Burke Paterson is reachable by email throughout this closure at [email protected] Private showings may be accommodated during the closure by appointment. Thank you for your patience and support.

#Repost @cbcarts CBC Toronto Crosshairs by @gordon_shadrach.... Says Gordon: ‘Crosshairs’ examines the inability of Black men to not be targeted, even while conducting simple rituals of self-care." This painting was included in my solo exhibition, Net Worth, at @unitedcontemporary. It explored how stereotypes impact the value North American society places on Black men. Questioning what constitutes Black masculinity, I take inspiration from such ongoing stereotypes as athleticism and strength in Black men, including images of sports and physical labour. I question the seemingly optimistic, albeit dubious, values of power and strength as they are applied to Black masculinity, and suggest how such images are the production of the long reach of historical, systematic racism. . . . CBC Arts is committed to standing with the Black community and those who fight anti-Black racism. In solidarity, this account is amplifying Black Canadian artists. #cbcarts See more
