#Laidecommenceici

BLACKFOOT PARADIGM Pencil and Ink by Chataya. LIKE to give one point. LOVE to give two points. ARTIST'S NOTES: My work is a drawing of a design that was used in this year's Orange Tshirt Day for Reconciliation Week.... My design represents five main plants which are: -Sage (Ka'ksimii) for cleansing -Sweetgrass (Sipatismo) for prayer -Mint (Ka'kitsimo) for healing -Tobacco (Pisstaahkaan) for offerings -Juniper (Siiksinoko) for spirituality The symbology in my design represent Blackfoot cosmology by incorporating four main celestial bodies: -Sun (Natosi) for male energy -Moon (Ko'komiki'somm) for female energy -Morning Star (Iipisowaahs) and -Mistaken Morning Star (Pa'ahsiipissowahs) for cosmic balance Four of these symbols represent the astrological information to understand the seasonal changes of harvest, as well as provide the lifegiving properties needed to sustain all life on Earth. The middle symbol which I took inspiration on from this year's Okaan at Sundance, is a Kitstaan, which are offerings that are placed in the center pole giving thanks for everything that surrounds us. In Blackfoot tradition, it is a celebration of life, therefore marking another cycle around the Sun. We honour this by coming together, bringing forth the harvests gathered in the seasons prior, and offering our gratitude to the Sun, the Moon and everything that helps us survive. This symbol is at the center because offerings are the root to what we give and take from the Earth to balance the reciprocated laws of nature. This symbol can also be looked at as Nitsitapi, the universal symbol of "Human Being". All these elements in my design help create a cycle that wraps around the center of the Kitstaan, forming a circular way of viewing how these plants are interconnected with everything that centers around Blackfoot culture. It is timeless - an infinite cycle of how the plants change and grow throughout the seasons in a nonlineal way. I want to give credit and thanks to both Star Cropped Eared Wolf and Beverly Hungry Wolf for helping me formulate the design, as well as teaching me the stories of Blackfoot cosmology, the properties of the plants used and offering their knowledge to myself as a Blackfoot artist in the making. ** Please be positive and constructive with comments.**
