Emergency shelters play a critical role in a community's homelessness response system: they provide an immediate place to stay while people reconnect with housing. Transitional housing serves a key role within the housing spectrum. It provides housing with supports for vulnerable people, to address specific needs in order to become more independent and able to transition to long-term stable housing in the community. Last year United Way investments helped 3,257 people secure and maintain housing. You can help ensure these critical supports are available when needed in the future. A new program in Niagara is helping homeless people navigate what can be a daunting health-care system. There are challenges working with people experiencing homelessness, a population that’s usually discharged back to the street with no followup, said Hossain.
