Prevailing wisdom suggests that people should not discuss politics or religion if they want to have peace in their relationships. What if it were possible to openly discuss our differences - without anger, defensiveness or the need to prove the rightness of our point of view? Our relationships would be more honest and more safe. Indeed, our relationships would be a "more perfect union". In his second inaugural address in 1865, Abraham Lincoln encouraged a divided nation to... come together to form a more perfect union, using "with Malice toward None and Charity for All as a guiding principle. As we anticipate the US election next week and we acknowledge the reality that no matter the outcome, some will be delighted while others will be distressed, what can we learn about the wholeness of our relationships with people who might see the world differently than we do? Please join us on Sunday as we consider ideas for building bridges and creating an environment of safety and openness in our relationships.

Have you ever felt resentful when other people or events demand your attention, leaving you no time to do what YOU want to do? Have you ever looked back and realized that a day, a week, a month or longer has passed, and you still haven’t begun that project you’ve always wanted to start, or you haven’t finished that project you’ve been meaning to complete? Have you ever felt frustrated at your own tendency to procrastinate?... If you’re like most of us, the answer to at least one of these questions is a resounding Yes! When we live on purpose and with purpose, we move away from powerlessness and we move toward empowerment, from feeling resentful and frustrated to feeling fulfilled and satisfied.

For those of you who haven't met Eric he is a long time friend and guest speaker at Unity of New Westminster. Eric is the past Director of the Centre for Spirituality at Work and co-founder of the world’s first Blue Box recycling program. Eric likes to speak from the heart, with humour and deep reverence for the sacred while helping people apply spiritual ideas... in practical ways, and see results in their daily lives. This Sunday his talk is entitled: What Can We Do... about What’s Going On? The past eight months have seen our world turned upside down. From coronavirus and racial injustice to forest fires/smoke, politics and conflicts, so many things have ‘hit us’ that we may wonder if life will ever be the same again. In such times, it’s easy to feel lost or powerless, as if we have no control or choice about the future. Yet, in Unity, we learn that the real ‘source of power’ is actually inside of us. So how do we connect with that power, and use it to shape our lives and world for the good? That’s what this Sunday is all about. Please join us!
To say that the past 6 months have been challenging would be an understatement. We have all been impacted by the pandemic, by discussions about racial inequality, by recognizing gaps in the desired treatment of people in long term care facilities and so much more. Some have lost loved ones, some have lost jobs, all have lost at least some connection with friends and family.... Yet despite all of the uncertainty, the past few months have offered us insights into what matters to us. We’ve discovered our own resilience and creativity, we have realized what's important and what we may have taken for granted. We’ve clarified our values. Perhaps the most important lesson from this pandemic is our realization that life is both fragile and precious. This Thanksgiving Day, we are reminded to appreciate and celebrate, every day. We are reminded that we have plenty to be grateful for. Please join us on Sunday as we give thanks for the abundance we already enjoy, and as we consider ways to be more intentional, more attentive and more appreciative in our lives.

Change is constant. Sometimes the changes we face are unwelcome or serious, such as a death, a pandemic, or a diagnosis. Sometimes the changes are welcome or less recognized, such as getting married, moving to a different school, selling a home or changing professions. Regardless of the changes we face, we will likely experience a period of emotional transition - a messy middle that can feel confusing, scary and exhilarating... sometimes at the same time! We explore the experience of Living in the Messy Middle".
