Please find attached our statement in solidarity with recent positions made by the University of Toronto Students' Union (UTSU) regarding International Student Tuition The University College Literary and Athletic Society would like to acknowledge and highlight recent statements made by the University of Toronto Students’ Union (UTSU) lobbying the University of Toronto for lowered international student tuition and increased support for these students.... The scheduled 5.3% increase in international student tuition fees comes as Society members and their peers from other divisions have repeatedly indicated that their cocurriculars, personal wellness, and academic experience has been severely impacted by COVID-19. We support the UTSU’s claims that the vast number of barriers to education during this time, including methods of class and exam delivery, assumed technological access, and digital literacy, among other points, have greatly diminished students’ experiences and simply do not justify maintaining a status quo increase. We further maintain the claim that the responsibility falls onto the University of Toronto to support students in the manner(s) stipulated in the UTSU’s statement. The Society, and our University and Academic Affairs (UAA) Commission, would like to point out that financial support exists for students through the University’s emergency grants, as well as through the UTSU’s Student Aid program, which can be accessed at utsu.ca/financial-assistance/ for more information. On August 25th, the Society will also be hosting a Town Hall for all students and student leaders interested in voicing their opinions on the changes to tuition, online learning, financial aid, etc., in relation to the upcoming academic year. The event can be accessed at bit.ly/UCaugtownhall and we would like to hear your thoughts and feedback either at the Town Hall, or through a feedback form which will be released prior to the event, as we work to present your interests to the University at this critical time. We would also like to reaffirm that the University College student body and its affiliates can reach out to the UAA should they have any questions or concerns. The UAA Commission will do their best to direct constituents to relevant resources and answer their queries. For these concerns, please contact Vaish Vijayan, the UAA Commissioner at [email protected]. It is necessary we take care of each other and ourselves by reaching into our communities for resources and support during this time. If you need a place to start, please visit the UC Lit’s compilation on emergency supports, which you can access via www.bit.ly/UCsupportresources. As a council, we are looking towards our future with careful optimism; to reaffirm our community, and its partnerships with our Faculty and our University. With light to shed, The University College Literary and Athletic Society
We are heartbroken to announce that Diabolos’ Coffee Bar will NOT be opening for the 2020 fall semester. As more classes transitioned to online, it became clea...r to us that it would be impossible to operate to the standards that our amazing customers deserve. We hope to reopen in January in adherence with City of Toronto guidelines. Continue tuning into our social media this coming fall semester for new online content and hiring information for 2021. Make sure to tag @diaboloscoffeebar when sharing your own coffee creations! We are committed to staying engaged with the UC community and can’t wait to see your beautiful faces soon!
