This could not be more true. Reward the good behaviour(s) you witness your dog doing. This could be as simple as the dog sitting and waiting to be petted instead of jumping on someone.

What Type of Trainer Am I? I take a BALANCED APPROACH to dog training. A balanced approach to dog training uses both positive and negative strategies without going to the extremes of either.... I am a big proponent of LIMA. LIMA stands for least intrusive, minimally aversive. LIMA is a methodology to shape, modify, correct and reward a behaviour(s) using the appropriate tools and methods to get the desired behaviour(s). For example, a lot of my clients struggle with loose leash walking their dogs. A prong collar is an exceptional tool (if CONDITIONED and used APPROPRIATELY) to obtain a loose leash walk. Tools are often used in order to obtain a desired position so that positive reinforcement can in fact be used. Remember your dog will not need to use corrective tools forever!! Dog ownership and training should be fun! Comment below and message to book your FREE CONSULT to help US help YOU with all of your dog training NEEDS and GOALS.

What is Dog Training Genesis? DTG has 2 programs the Core Excellence and the E-Collar Excellence. The Core Excellence is a comprehensive, step-by-step instructional online course that will give you the knowledge, foundation and practical skills necessary to achieve obedience with your dog. This online program provides a marker system, Puppy Management content, HANDS on tutorials of the basic commands of SIT, PLACE, LOOK, DOWN, COME and HEEL and additional BONUS content. It Is... unique as it takes you through positive training techniques and then teaches you how to properly and safely introduce mild pressure and corrections to make sure you always get the behaviour you want from your dog. E-Collar Excellence is the best remote e-collar instructional video on the market. Better yet, it is for all training levels, basic to advanced. This program includes all the material from Core Excellence as Core is the foundation of all of our training. Because of this you must complete Core Excellence before granted access to E-Collar Excellence. This program gives you the theory to understand how to SAFELY use an E-Collar on your dog. DTG is a self-guide do it at your own pace online dog training program. With it you gained access to a Private Facebook Members Only page where you can ask questions and UPK9 trainers like myself and other members will provide troubleshooting. DTG has helped THOUSANDS of dog owners effectively train their dog and achieve obedience. I started off my dog training journey using DTG. Within 2 weeks of using DTG I had Trapper loose leash walking and listening to basic commands. If you have read my story, I did not believe that was possible so quickly BUT it is! Additionally, my wife is now using DTG to train our puppy Bolt. I cannot speak on her experience with DTG but I can speak to the remarkable results she is achieving with Bolt and I can only attribute that to her learning and practicing of the DTG methodology. DTG follows a framework. If you watch the videos, truly understand why you are training the way that you are and put in the repetitions you WILL see results. DTG comes with a MONEY BACK GUARANTEE and you have it FOR LIFE. Your access never expires! I would also like to note one has ever asked for a refund. It is a well respected and well trusted program that will give you the results you need no matter your dog training wants and needs. Want to learn more. Click the link below for access to a FREE Dog Training Mini Series that will get you started on your dog training journey using the same tools and methods used in DTG as well as with UPK9 North Bay. https://www.dukeferguson.com/a/24681/abuKo7Lk

We have spoken about the importance of a COME and SIT command. Today we will be talking about the third most important command, LOOK. Trapper was first given away to the humane society because he chased horses relentlessly. This is a picture, year post adoption, of Trapper following a LOOK command in an environment that is highly arousing for him. Can your dog give you ENGAGEMENT in all environments? When your dog is paying ATTENTION to you and nothing else during obedience ...that is the key to SUCCESS. The LOOK command will help with this. You need a food MOTIVATED dog. Bring the FOOD to your CHIN. This will bring the dogs head up and once the dog LOOKS at you mark with BREAK and reward with FOOD. Once you get the EYE CONTACT immediately start naming it, LOOK. Continue using the lure and REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT. Eventually, phase off of the lure. Add distractions such as having the food in the palm of your hand and moving your hand around. Once the dog stops looking at your hand and gives EYE CONTACT mark with BREAK and reward with FOOD, Again, REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT. It is also important to do this in all environments to ensure your dog is MOTIVATED and pays ATTENTION to YOU no matter where you are. Does your dog IGNORE your commands? Would you like your dog to give you their attention in various environments? If so like, comment and share this post. Comment below and message for your FREE CONSULT to help US help YOU with your dog training NEEDS and GOALS.

The weather was pretty chilly this morning. What do you like to do in the fall with your dog(s). Fall is the perfect season for outdoor activities with Bolt. He is our fair weathered dog. Trapper on the other hand loves all seasons especially if he gets to play Chuck It.

Today we are going to be talking about the importance of a SIT command. This should be the simplest command to teach because the dog should already know how to sit. BUT just because they know how does not mean they will in all situations. We first need to train the behaviour of SIT. FIRST,... Get your dog food MOTIVATED and ENGAGED. This allows for an easy lure to get your dog into the desired position, the dogs butt on the ground. Instead of pulling up on the leash or pushing the dogs bum to the ground until they SIT. Use the food as a lure to get your dog to sit. DO NOT talk. Just use the food as a lure. Once your dog is sitting MARK it with BREAK and REWARD with food. This will reenforce the desired behaviour. The dog will learn if I SIT I will get paid with FOOD. SECOND, When you know you can get the behaviour of SIT, NAME IT. When the dog hears SIT and s/he does it, you have obtained speed. Say SIT mark it with BREAK and reward with food. REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT. Once the dog hits the ground every time you say SIT, begin doing it EVERYWHERE and at distances. Note: distance SITS can be done very successfully with a PLACE command, which we will cover in future posts. THIRD, You want DURATION. SPEED before DURATION. Have the dog SIT. Then count to 3, then 4, then 5 and so on before marking with BREAK and reward the behaviour. As the dog is sitting in DURATION you can say GOOD to COMMUNICATE and reenforce to your dog that s/he is doing the desired command before marking with BREAK and feeding. Again REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT!! Eventually you will be able to obtain duration without a reinforcer such as GOOD. If the dog moves out of position before saying BREAK say NO and have the dog go back into position. When the desired duration has been achieved mark with BREAK and feed. EVENTUALLY, Add in distractions and distances. A distraction can be as little as walking away from the dog. When adding in something new use a REINFORCER such as GOOD while the dog remains in the SIT position before marking with BREAK and FEED. Do you have trouble getting your dog to SIT? Maybe you just want your dog to SIT when asked. Comment below and message for your FREE CONSULT to help US help YOU with your dog training NEEDS and WANTS.

COME, SIT and LOOK The THREE most IMPORTANT commands you can teach your dog. TODAY we will address the COME command.... COME, should be one of the first commands to teach your dog. Why? It allows you to recall your dogs away from a potential bad situation and to keep your dog safe. It means you can recall your dog back to you in any situation. It means s/he is paying attention to you. Lets take a look at how to teach your dog COME. In order to do so the muscle memory needs to be there to have a solid COME command. Below is the foundation of how we teach COME: We need to prime the recall. Use a long line to start the training. Get the dog ENGAGED with you. Distract the dog by throwing food away from you. Apply a small amount of leash pressure by walking away from the dog to signal the dog to RETURN to you. Once the desired behaviour has been achieve mark with GOOD or BREAK and reward with food. Feed at eye level to avoid the dog from jumping on you. The dog will learn the game quickly because they are getting a reward for the desired behaviour, come. REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT. Timing is crucial to mark a desired behaviour like COME. Once the dog is responding rapidly with the leash pressure by walking away from the dog, NAME the command. Again distract the dog by throwing food and say "COME". Say it ONCE and one time only. You want to remain relevant to the dog. Once the dog comes to you mark with GOOD or BREAK and reward with food. The leash allows for guidance back to you and establishing a position you want your dog to be in once the COME command is achieved. Eventually you will be able to phase off the leash when the command is known. Competing MOTIVATORS will exist. This is why you need your dog ENGAGED and you need to remain RELEVANT to your dog in all environments. E-collars are a wonderful tool to use to ensure you can communicate with your dog in all situation. We will post more about the importance of e-collars in another post. This is Dia, a Board and Train doing an off leash recall at the park. The park is a highly stimulating environment with other dogs and people. PLACE A place is anything with a definable boundaries or edge that the dog can get on or in. The PLACE command is an excellent management tool for duration and distance work. It is also has everyday uses such as for door greetings and keeping the dog away from the supper table.... This is Doug, an Ultimate Obedience client, practicing place on different objects. Good job Doug! Do you want to learn more about the PLACE command? Comment below and message for your FREE consult to help US help YOU with your dog training GOALS.

A COMMON question we are asked is: How long will it take to train my dog? Now, let us ask you: How long does it take to cook spagheti? Your response may be, that depends on how hot the water is. ... The same concept can be applied to answering how long will it take to train my dog. It 100% depends on how MOTIVATED your dog is. How to get your dog MOTIVATED. MOTIVATION is key to SUCCESSFUL dog training. The three most common motivators are FOOD, TOYS and AFFECTION. Once MOTIVATION has been established your dog will have the IGNITION to train and learn effectively which is one of the reasons why the NO FREE LUNCH POLICY is the foundation of our obedience training.
