Little man Kyro accompanied me shopping at #canadiantire . He was such a good boy heeling with the cart, down stays when I wanted to browse the displays, ignoring people unless I gave the release cue if someone wanted to pet him. HOW DO WE TRAIN A 6 MONTH OLD PUPPY TO HEEL? Here’s 1 way. 1) Build ignition- get the dog hungry, food motivated and willing to work. 2) Teach markers- Train the dog to understand stay in behaviour (good) and when work is done (break) so there is no confusion. 3) Preconditioned tool use- teach the owners proper leash handling, how to condition an e collar or prong collar in modern non harsh ways with positive reinforcement.... 4) Body language- Teach owners how to actually walk with their dog beside them as many people do not know how to execute turns etc with a dog beside them instead of in front of them pulling. 5) Practice, practice, practice. WHAT IS LEADERSHIP? This is a word thats thrown around a lot to pet parents but what does it mean? Dogs are social pack animals and in a pack, in order for there to be harmony, there needs to be a clear hierarchy and pack leaders. This is nothing new to humans as we have a hierarchy in our families. The parents are the leaders and the children have to listen to the parents. Having to listen to your parents is not a punishment. The family rules are in place to ensure the ch...ild grows up into a well behaved, contributing member of society. When children do not follow the rules there are consequences such as grounding (loss of freedom), loss of things they value such as devices. Parents are more experienced at life and its their job to teach the children how to cope in todays world for safety and sanity of the family. We dont treat our children as equals until they are much older. So why do we throw the rule book out for our dogs and allow them to do what they want with zero consequences? Having rules and structure when it comes to raising your dog is not a bad thing and wont cause your dog not to love you. Think about people who go to rehab for addictions. Many people do well in rehab! Why? Rules, structure, accountability. Their entire day is planned. There are leaders setting schedules for them for therapy, work, meal times, there are people holding them accountable for their actions, freedom to come and go from the facility is controlled. People feel taken care of and have stability in their life for the first time. They discover that they have purpose and thrive. Then they eventually leave rehab and if they go back to their old chaotic life doing what they want all the time the chance of falling off the wagon is very high. So being a good leader for your dog will absolutely not kill your relationship with them, it will only enhance it and you will bond more deeply guaranteed. Leadership does not mean dictatorship. MEET BRONN!! Bronn made one hell of an entrance for his consult today! Came in, -jumped on the bags of dog food for sale. -took toys off the wall.... -got into food samples. -jumped on back of the couch to look out the window 3 times. -got into the bin of place board leg grips. -first dog ever to jump on the table and try and come in the window. Stopped him first time but second time we had to get pics! The next hurricane should be named after him. I LOVE this dog!!! He has tons of drive and potential! Ive got a nest of baby Juncos living in the flower pot on my deck and heres Mom with dinner. Its a great time to use this as an opportunity to teach my dogs to not mess with wildlife. MEET K9 CRASH! Crash just signed up for the UPK9 Crash Test for obedience training! I can tell you right now that Crash is no Crash test dummy! Hes a smart boy who has drive and work ethic. Right now that drive and work ethic are channeled into naughty boy behaviours such as jumping, pulling and not listening in distractions. Hes a fun loving guy whose milkshake brings everyone to the yard!... Crash will be starting Ultimate Obedience training with Sara where his owners will learn the following: How to communicate more effectively in a way that Crash can understand. How to set boundaries with Crash to modify his behaviour from persistent and pushy to humble and respectful and maintain his fun outgoing personality.
