Anthony Goertz's film and master's thesis (in Gender and Social Justice Studies), "The Line," is about the people who work sorting Edmontonians' trash. They are hired because of barriers to employment like criminal records, newcomer status, disabilities or struggles with addiction. "I wanted to show, through their stories, that these people are our brothers, our sisters, our friendspeople who are contributing to society." Congratulations Anthony on you MA and this incredibly powerful film. https://youtu.be/HpHU2GHiZ1o University of Alberta #ualberta20 Department of Women's and Gender Studies, University of Alberta

Growing in rural Georgia, Emily Hull immersed herself in the local fauna, whether that was birds, rabbits, turtles, or less appealingly but still with a curious eye, snakes. Her fascination with the natural world deepened, eventually leading her to study human-animal interactions and zooarchaeology at the university level. Now graduating with a PhD in Anthropology, Hull has focused her research on reindeer and caribou in Canada and Fennoscandia, studying anatomy, osteology, pathologyand of course, their myriad connections to humans. Rolling on with our #UAlberta20 convocation stories, Xuan Xu graduates this year with an unusual double major pairing: Art & Design, and Economics. Art & Design fed her passion for creativity, while Economics helped her understand the world through a different lens -- one of international trade and profit maximization. What happens when a vocalist from India combines her Malayalam song with the jazz stylings of a Canada-based musician? Or when an audio producer in Kenya applies his African influence to create a new arrangement of a Ukrainian folk song? The answer can be found in a series of new music tracks created by the TranceCultural Orchestra, a COVID-19 era development of the live, face to face music presented for the past three years by the Edmonton TransCultural Orchestra, founded by UAlberta professor of music and ethnomusicologist Michael Frishkopf. The toll of COVID-19 on older generations has illuminated the stark consequences of ageism, but age-based mistreatment and discrimination is not new, says Margaret Morganroth Gullette, an internationally known cultural critic in age studies. The pandemic, she says, has only made it worse. Gullette will be speaking at the Department of Women's and Gender Studies’ annual Dallas Cullen Memorial Lecture on October 1. Cullen, a pioneer in the study of women's leadership as well as... gender and organizations, was the first chair of the burgeoning and interdisciplinary Women's Studies Program, which was established in 1987. Earning full department status in 2013, Women's and Gender Studies honours Cullen, who passed away in 2010, with the annual memorial lecture - the signature event of the academic year. Dr. Jean O’Hara is an assistant professor in the Department of Drama at the University of Alberta. She directs and teaches theatre and has worked in partnership with Indigenous communities for the past fifteen years, including with Native Earth Performing Arts, the Centre for Indigenous Theatre, and Spiderwoman Theater.
