David Gutenberg is a 4th year undergraduate student working towards an Economic Honours degree with a certificate in Finance. For David, getting out of the house and finding ways to socialize safely has been integral to maintaining his mental wellbeing. He finds that spending time in the outdoors and being active has been especially important for his ability to focus during online schooling. We are trying to collect as many mental health stories from a diverse group of studen...ts, faculty and staff. We are hoping to show how diverse mental illness is, and the way it presents so differently in every person. We want this series of posts to show that you aren't alone in your journey to mental wellness. We want to work together with the students and staff to provide ideas and steps to help your mental health. These stories are intended to help students connect with their peers in a time where physical and social contact is limited. To be featured on our page and share your own mental health story fill out the google form in our bio!

Annette is a third year MechE student at the University of Alberta, as well as an executive member of the ESSS. In the faculty of Engineering, mental health isn’t taboo; for many students she’s witnessed, it seems to be a badge of honour even or a competition for the poorest health and highest GPA. It has been her goal to spread awareness of these problems. Although she hasn’t had too much of a problem with mental illness, she does take notice on how it affects her friends, a...nd during the COVID-19 season, the simple act of having conversation can be that much more difficult. Thankfully, during the semester, she is able to recreate the feeling of sitting together during lunch, which brings some semblance of normality back into her and her friends’ lives. Her sense of community was sewn together by firstly taking initiative and calling out toxic behaviour, and secondly by communicating, which seems easier said than done. By communicating as a team, she prevents unnecessary stress and makes a change in her environment for the better. Our group has made the tough decision to postpone the fall Mind Over Matter 2020 race. We are sad we cant host the event this year, and raise funds for the CMHA Edmonton again, but the health and safety of our members and participants is most important. Stay tuned to our account for more updates as we look to host the event in spring! We appreciate everyones support, and hope you all are staying safe and healthy!
