PEOPLE OF PSYCHOLOGY Meet Alexander Taikh! His hometown is Calgary and he majored in Psychology and Biological Sciences! My primary research interests are in memory and psycholinguistics. I hope to find out more how mental processing during study influences later remembering, and how information is used to generate meaning from written language. ... My MSc thesis was with Dr. Glen Bodner at the University of Calgary, and it examined how the amount of mental processing during the study of words influenced the subjective experiences in remembering them.My PhD, with Dr. Stephen Lupker at Western University, and my current research with Drs. Gagne and Spalding here at the University of Alberta, focus on the processes used in generating meaning from written language. Specifically, I am interested in how the richness of information associated with the meaning of a word influences its reading. Fun fact: his favorite board game is Avalon! #peopleofpsychology #psychology

PoP: Introducing Dr. Lauren Guillette! Originally from Woodstock, Connecticut, she "attended Ripon College (Ripon, Wisconsin) and double-majored in Psychology and Anthropology. My first intended major was Philosophy, which I switched after one semester. I also changed my second major from Biology to Anthropology after failing chemistry twice! I took three years 'off' (I was a ski bum and waitress/bartender) before I went to Mount Holyoke College (South Hadley, Massachusetts) ...for a Masters Degree in Experimental Psychology and then received my PhD from the University of Alberta in Comparative Cognition and Behavior. I was a Research Fellow in the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews (St Andrews, Scotland) for five years before I returned to the U of A as an Assistant Professor in 2018. I currently hold the appointment of Honorary Research Fellow at St Andrews because I have ongoing projects and grants with several colleagues in the UK. I study psychology because I am fascinated by learning, in particular questions regarding how animals learn to solve problems they face in every-day life, such as where to find food, with whom to mate, and where and how to build nests." Fun Fact, she cycles to work every day (yes, even in the winter!), and has seen the band Phish 80+ times. She loves to crochet, garden, cook spicy food, downhill ski and curl. See more

Undergraduate Psychology Association 01.12.2019

Meet the brilliant Robin Andrews! She is a Psychology major, sociology minor: I thrive with a busy, diverse, and balanced schedule. Find me tinkering with my google calendar to juggle my UPA executive position, being the President of Her Campus at UAlberta, and being VP I.T. for Students for Learning. I love getting outdoors and getting active! I travel to the mountains at least twice per year, and I love hiking, hot yoga and swimming. I have been a swimming coach and a life...guard for 3+ years and I am a Kaplan Student Brand Ambassador on UAlberta Campus (hit me up if you want free resources!) Overall, I am just a junior-year psychology gal trying to do a variety of things to suit my variety of interests! Fun fact: I'm into graphic designing so I actually have designed some yearbook covers and layout as well as the photo booth templates, signage, guest list board etc. for my sister's wedding.

PoP: Meet Dr. Elena Nicoladis! She completed her undergraduate degree majoring in Psychology and French Literature, with a minor in Spanish. "As an undergraduate, I was sure I wanted to be a clinical psychologist. But then I took a course on psycholinguistics and discovered that there are actual paying jobs that combine my interest in psychology and languages. There was no looking back after that. I now do research on how children learn language(s). It strikes me as miraculous that children even learn one language ever, much less multiple languages." Fun Fact about her: She got her diving license before she got her driver's license, and she is currently learning Greek!

Dr. Jennifer Passey "I completed my undergraduate, Masters, and Ph.D. in Psychology at Queen's University in Kingston, ON. When I started my undergrad, I was enrolled in the Life Sciences (pre-med) program, and Psychology was my one elective course. I feel in love with psychology, and switched my major after one term. As a graduate student, my research focused on how individual differences like causal uncertainty influenced social cognition and self-regulation. As a student ...I had the opportunity to teach, and decided to focus on teaching for my future career. In 2009, I completed my Ph.D. and started my career at the University of Alberta as a Faculty Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts. Since that time, I've been promoted to Full Teaching Professor. I hope to contribute to the field of psychology by encouraging and training future researchers." See more

We’ve be teasing a lot on our guest speakers for the Mental Health Banquet, but how about the UPA Execs? Here’s a little something bout us! The Undergraduate Psychology Association, or UPA, is designed to promote the study of psychology, assist students with their academic endeavors, encourage social interaction between people interested in psychology, connect members to vocational and volunteering opportunities, as well as provide other services to meet students’ needs such... as merchandise and mentorship. Our goal for this year is to improve mental health on campus. It’s not easy being a student and being able to cope with all that university has in store for us, but we want people to challenge themselves and take that very important step to focus on their mental health. UPA encourages peer support, whether that is through assisting you in finding resources for your health, social events, academic achievement, or furthering your career in the field of Psychology.
