Here is a thought to end your Tuesday. Only you can determine your meaning of success! During your process surround yourself with people you can depend on whether that’s family, friends or a community. Today, Renee Michaela Fajardo shares with us some touching words on what this year has been for her for our Student Diaries. This past year has been less about singing and that's OK. More than anything, it's been a time of really tough conversations and reflection; of learning... to hold space or demand it with patience, of reframing 'success' and of finding community in places that I never expected to be in. It's been a year of exploring what it means to be Filipino in the spaces where I work. A year of fiercely yet helplessly missing home. Of remembering, in the small steps we take to rebuild, what the real fight is and who the real loves are while remaining contained by four walls and unpredictable borders. It's also been a year of binging insane amounts of comedy panel shows and living every moment of American Gods at 2 am on Mondays. #uoftmusic #uoftvoice #uoftopera #mezzosoprano #success #community #studentdiaries #music #opera #toronto #the6ix University of Toronto Faculty of Music, Voice Studies at the University of Toronto, University of Toronto Alumni & University of Toronto Faculty of Music Alumni.

Good morning to our fabulous followers! Today is a beautiful and sunny day in Toronto, and to continue your morning on the path of positivity is tenor David Walsh posting for our series of Student Diaries this week. This past year has definitely been out of the ordinary for so many. I think we can say this pandemic has definitely taken a toll on people’s mental health, but throughout these times I have tried to stay as positive as possible by finding the still very beautifu...l things that are very present in the outdoors. My eyes have been opened this year by spending so much time in the outdoors because there isn’t much else to do. I now even try to practice as much as I can outside in nature for fun, because for me it is very soothing. Even though this year has been out of the ordinary, we find the small things to help us through, and these small things have been helping me and my music making!! #uoftmusic #uoftvoice #uoftopera #mentalhealth #naturephotography #positivity #music #opera #tenor #toronto #the6ix University of Toronto Faculty of Music, Voice Studies at the University of Toronto, University of Toronto Alumni & University of Toronto Faculty of Music Alumni.

We can all agree that this school year has been quite different, but it has permitted us to connect with our families or to do more things for ourselves while still attending school at a distance. Back in September, we introduced our artists at UofT Opera for this season, but through our new series of our Student Diaries, you’ll get to know a little bit more about our singers on a personal level and what this school year has been like for them so far. Starting off is Mezzo-S...oprano Alexandra Fee from East Moriches, NY! The hardest times are what make us stronger and I feel like I’ve grown a lot through this time. I’ve realized the world won’t fall apart whether I do good or bad, finding things or places that bring me true peace are super important to include in my everyday life, and no matter what I have, I can always trust in myself. One of my favorite places is the beach and I’ve found that gratitude journals have really help me remove the negatives and remind me of the positives in my life. As I continue my musical journey, I’m reminded how far I’ve come and how far I have to go. #uoftmusic #uoftvoice #uoftopera #studentdiaries #longisland #eastmoriches #newyork #ny #schoolatadistance #mezzosoprano #toronto #the6ix Voice Studies at the University of Toronto, University of Toronto Faculty of Music, University of Toronto Alumni & University of Toronto Faculty of Music Alumni.

It’s Friday! We hope you’ve all had a great week. Today, we have our final introduction of #UofTOpera singers. Welcome our third tenor, David Walsh who is in his first year of the Masters of Opera program! When David is travelling by bike around Toronto, he sings at people so they won’t hit him with their car. Safety first, and it’s great practice for your stamina! More about David: From there David has participated in a wide range of vocal performances. Recently he became a ...part of the Orpheus Choir of Toronto as a Sidgwick Scholar and s highlight at the beginning of this year was when he placed as a prize winner in the Toronto Mozart Vocal Competition. At U of T Opera this past season, he made his debut in Le Nozze di Figaro as Don Curzio. He was asked to perform as part of the chorus for Opera Atelier’s production of Idomeneo in 2019. He was asked back to the Opera Atelier Chorus for this season for their production of Don Giovanni. In the spring of 2018 he was invited to perform with the Against the Grain Theatre as a chorus soloist for the opera Orphée et Eurydice. In May 2017, he was an opera chorus member in the critically acclaimed Oksana G, a new Canadian opera premiered by Tapestry Opera, where he had the honour of working with many esteemed artists. He is part of the Cor Unum Ensemble, an ensemble run by young adults from across Toronto. As well as an avid singer, David is an avid biker. This form of transportation is the way he practices a lot of his repertoire. So, if you ever see a blur of red hair and hear some Fauré on the downtown streets of Toronto, you have most likely encountered David Walsh.

Returning tenor, Elias Theocharidis completes his final year of his masters with #UofTOpera. Besides his obsession with the early live recordings of young Maria Callas and Mario del Monaco, during quarantine Elias became a new RuPaul's Drag Race fan, finding the many ways of self-expression in the art of drag to be entirely reflective of the artists' duty within the art of opera. More about Elias: Born of Greek and Italian descent, Canadian tenor Elias Theocharidis has been n...oted as quite raw and exuberant (John Gilks, operaramblings). Elias has attended programs such as the Chautauqua Institution under the direction of Marlena Malas, SongFest, the BANFF Centre’s Opera in the 21st Century, Toronto Summer Music’s Art of Song Program, Highlands Opera Studio & St. Andrew's by-the-Sea Workshops. We are extremely proud to see Edward Johnson being honoured by the Canadian Opera Community. A little back story on our honouree: Edward Johnson was a Canadian tenor who had great success under the name of Eduardo Di Giovanni. He became general manager of the Metropolitan Opera House in 1935, a position which he held for fifteen years. ... At a time when there was no available funding to build a new Faculty of Music after WWII, Sir Johnson took it into his own hands to put the wheels in motion for a new music building before his death in 1959. Therefore, the new music building was named in his honour. The new building for the Faculty of Music attracted a record number of students and had a significant impact on the musical life of Canada. #UofTOpera #uoftvoice #uoftmusic #uoftalumni #edwardjohnson
