Just wanted to post a quick thanks to Helping Our Northern Neighbours for their kindness in sending clothes to the men. We've had some staff turnover and will be getting back to you to keep the good things flowing in the near future.

THE NUMBERS In a conversation with a City official, there was some doubt expressed about the numbers of homeless men that will be left out when we move to the new site, as noted in our recent Public Service Announcement. To dispel that doubt, we'd like to share our methodology for arriving at the numbers. We pulled the names of every man that stayed at the Men's Homeless Shelter for three months pre-COVID, December 2019, January 2020 and February 2020. We removed the name...s of those men who are going either into affordable housing or transitional housing at the new site. We then looked at the men with highest occupancy, regular users, those already assigned a bed in the current shelter. We took those off the list. Then we looked the remaining men who stayed 1 - 45 days at the Men's Shelter during that period. There were 25 - 30 men we expected would be trying to access the shelter again. The expectation expressed in that conversation was that the Low Barrier Shelter, which opened in late January 2020, may catch some of that number. However, the Low Barrier Shelter itself has been running near or at full capacity for a majority of the time in the last few months, and staff have had to turn people away. Also the Low Barrier Shelter services men and women, so not all spaces are available for men. We have a homelessness crisis in this City. We have an overcrowding crisis in this City. We have a housing crisis in this City. It's only going to get worse without major change in how we do housing, homelessness and addiction services in this City.
