As we head into an election weekend here in BC, students in Grade 2 have been learning about their rights and responsibilities as citizens. What are our rights, and what are our responsibilities? We have a right, and a responsibility to use our voice, and vote. Ms. Leeson and Ms. O’Byrne gave their students five mascots as candidates. Students were split into groups, with each group assigned a mascot. The groups had to work together to read their mascot’s campaign agenda, an...d then compel their fellow classmates to vote for their respective mascot. After each group had presented their platform, they held a vote using real ballots and teacher-designed voting stations. The outcome was almost a tie between Sam the Wolf and Deneige the Polar Bear, but it taught students the importance and value of using their voice and their vote wisely! Have a wonderful weekend, everyone. See you all again on Monday! #urbanacademybc #studentsofua #teachersofua #weareUALions #hearusroar #isabc #handsonlearning #inquirybasedlearning #newwestisbest #westcoastbestcoast

Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. ~ Marcel Proust Today, and everyday, we are thankful for the vibrant and supportive #urbanacademybc community. Whether you are student, parent, grandparent, staff, leadership, or Board, YOU make us who we are. This has been a year when supporting each other and sticking together has been more important than it is ever likely to be again in our lifetime. Your commitment to our school has been steadfast. You are the gardeners to our soul Happy Thanksgiving dear UA Community, from all at #UAHQ #studentsofua #teachersofua #weareUALions #handsonlearning #inquirybasedlearning #isabc #newwestisbest #westcoastbestcoast

In joining with the @newwestchamber initiative to start a tidal wave of gratitude this month with the #thankathon2020 , UA primary students have created a colourful and gratitude-laden Thankful Tree on the front of our school. Included in those 'thank you's' are firefighters, store clerks, teachers, truck drivers and so many more members of the community. But even more exciting is that the lion's share of leaves are messages of appreciation going out to doctors, nurses, pharm...acists and other medical professionals who walk right by the school on their way from their parking lot up to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation Hospital on a daily basis. So, RCH Staff we invite you to take a minute or two on your walk down Rousseau in #Sapperton to read the notes of appreciation and feel the love from our community to yours! #urbanacademybc #studentsofua #teachersofua #weareUALions #newwestisbest #gratitude

Today is UNESCO World Teachers’ Day, and this year the theme is Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future. It is a day when we celebrate and acknowledge the educators of the world for all they do. This year, when everything they know about teaching in a classroom got turned on its head, our teachers adapted with grace and flexibility. Some even ignited a creative flame they hadn’t know was there before! This morning, our Head of School, Mr. Slinger, and Vice Princ...ipal, Ms. MacLeod, went to every classroom to celebrate our #teachersofua with a special @charlieschocolates chocolate apple*. To all of our teachers and support staff, thank you for all that you do for our students! We you! #urbanacademybc #studentsofua #weareUALions #isabc #handsonlearning #inquirybasedlearning #newwestisbest #westcoastbestcoast #worldteachersday2020

This summer, we set out to update our marketing stock photography. The concept? To portray our students in the careers that await them. Hours of thought and planning went into each photo but one, in particular, had to be just right. A female judge, "an homage to RBG. Fair but serious.", was the instruction given to the creative team we worked with on this project. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a brilliant and courageous trailblazer of our time, a champion for equality and a force f...or good. Her tireless pursuit of a fairer, better world for all taught us that we are all capable of more than we believe. Her legacy to us is to pick up the torch and continue to fight for that which we believe in, and to do so with compassion and an open heart. "Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you." Ruth Bader Ginsburg, March 15, 1933 - September 18, 2020. This is one of our greatest wishes for Urban Academy students. #urbanacademybc #studentsofua #teachersofua #isabc #handsonlearning #weareUALions #hearusroar #ruthbaderginsburg #notoriousrbg

Fall is here, hear the yell. Back to school, ring the bell. Brand new shoes, walking blues. Climb the fence, books and pens. I can tell that we are going to be friends.... Yes, I can tell that we are going to be friends. Week two is almost down, and everyone is so happy to be back (we can see the smize above the mask)! The atmosphere in the building is charged with the excitement for what this school year holds, and how we will all navigate it together. Have a wonderful weekend UA Lions, and get some rest for Picture Day on Monday! #urbanacademybc #studentsofua #teachersofua #weareUALions #isabc #newwestisbest #westcoastbestcoast

Cheers to you, dear #parentsofua The #urbanacademybc #PainttheTownGala2020 - the gala that never was - went online this year in a bid to sell the #uastudentart that our students worked so diligently on earlier this year. And it was a resounding success! For 10 days, the art was available to view online and on our side-walk-turned-art-walk on Rousseau Street. We received some lovely messages from neighbours who saw the art as they passed by the school, sharing how the disp...lay brightened their day! We couldn’t come together as a group as had been planned for April, but boy, did you come together for our #uaonlinegala2020 - some of you even went head-to-head! The teachers and staff got great enjoyment watching the bidding wars and wondering which piece would raise the most! The funds raised through donated ticket sales and the student art auction will make a remarkable difference to our STEM program next year for all students! Thank you to our dedicated #UAGalaCommittee for not giving up on a gala this year, to #teachersofua and #studentsofua for the work they put in to these beautiful pieces, and of course, to you, #parentsofua . Your continued support and dedication to our school is most appreciated Have a wonderful summer break and we look forward to seeing you all again in September! #weareualions #hearusroar

Time for the #PainttheTownGala2020 artwork from Grade 4 today! All artwork created by students from JK to Grade 5 is available to view in-person at the school entrance or online, where you can also bid for the piece of your choosing until 8.30pm on Friday, June 19, 2020. in bio. Artists: Grade 4 (Ms. Mailley). Title: Haring Skyline. Materials: Acrylic and ink.... Ms. Mailley's class created a triptych based on the theme Paint the Town. Urban Academy is a diverse school that comes from multiple municipalities across the Lower Mainland. Students wanted to have a uniting image that all Lower Mainland residents can associate with. As a result, the Vancouver skyline was selected. The background effect was created using an experimental drip and splatter technique. We then infused a Keith Haring inspired graffiti style to fill the skyline and represent the public art which increasingly adorns the buildings of our metropolitan area. . . . Artists: Grade 4 (Ms. McKnight). Title: Beehive. Materials: Watercolour and pencil crayon. Throughout the year, the students in Ms. McKnight’s class discussed the importance of community, supporting others and working together. These ideals were the inspiration for our Beehive project. Each student used elements of design techniques to draw, shade and colour their own buzzy friend. The students worked collaboratively - like busy bees - to create the honeycombs, using a variety of watercolour blending techniques. Our art piece represents the value of a strong community and the understanding that working together promotes mutual success. #studentsofua #teachersofua #parentsofua #urbanacademybc #urbanacademygala #uastudentart #uaonlinegala2020 #weareualions #hearusroar @ Urban Academy

Today it is the turn of our Grade 3 classes to showcase their #PainttheTownGala2020 online Student Art Auction. The art work created by all students from JK to Grade 5 is available for viewing in-person at the school entrance or online, where you can also bid for the piece of your choosing until 8.30pm on Friday, June 19, 2020. in bio. Artists: Grade 3 (Ms. Burnside). Title: The Mythical Mountains. Materials: Watercolour Pencil Crayons.... In Ms. Burnside's class, students created their dynamic landscape using zentangle patterns. Each student drew a section of the picture and coloured it in using watercolour pencil crayons. In their Unit of Inquiry, students had been connecting their ideas to The First Peoples Principles of Learning. In this piece, students reflected on the land we live on, the importance of protecting the land and the reciprocal relationship we should instill with our environment. . . . Artists: Grade 3 (Mrs. Wilson). Title: Rainbow Sunset. Materials: Watercolour. Mrs. Wilson’s Grade 3 class explored drawing and watercolour painting techniques in the creation of their art piece Rainbow Sunset. Each child designed a detailed lotus flower. Then, they selected their favourite sections from each to create their collaborative class piece. The students chose the lotus flower as the focus for their piece as it symbolizes beauty, patience and peacefulness. The colourful background represents serenity and tranquility students feel at Urban Academy. #studentsofua #teachersofua #parentsofua #urbanacademygala #uastudentart #uaonlinegala2020 #weareualions #hearusroar #urbanacademybc @ Urban Academy

Returning to our series showcasing the #urbanacademybc #PainttheTownGala2020 , up today are the Grade 2 works. All pieces from JK to Grade 5 for the Student Art Auction are available to view and bid on at any time online. in bio. Artists: Grade 2 (Ms. Leeson). Title: Reading Under the Willow Tree. Materials: Painting and melted crayon.... In Ms. Leeson’s class, students explored materials that can be changed through chemical and physical processes. For this collaborative artwork, students experimented turning solids into liquids and vice versa. Crayons were melted into liquid form and then solidified after dropping down the canvas to create the image of a willow tree. The willow stands tall over a child reading. Students in Grade 2 are learning to be much like the willow: strong, stable, deeply rooted and prepared to face any storm or challenge! . . . Artists: Grade 2 (Ms. O’Byrne). Title: Magnificent Mountains. Materials: Felt. In Ms. O'Byrne's class, students collaborated to explore felting techniques. Their Social Studies unit focussed on the diverse characteristics of different environments in Canada. Their inspiration for this piece was drawn from Lawren Harris's paintings of snow-capped mountains. The subject reminds us of the outstanding beauty that surrounds us in British Columbia and the need to respect our surroundings. The students’ collaboration on this project is indicative of their willingness to work together to preserve and care for our world. #studentsofua #teachersofua #parentsofua #urbanacademygala #uastudentart #uaonlinegala2020 #weareualions #hearusroar @ Urban Academy
