It’s with deep sadness I share, our beloved Aunt Kathy lost her long battle with cancer and peacefully passed away shortly after Christmas. She was special. As I looked for old photos at the farmhouse, I came across some hand written notes and cards thanking her for being a positive influence and having such a generous heart. She was always the first to show up whenever something went wrong, and was always interested in how people were doing. Aunt Kathy was loving, resilient... and extremely hardworking. She encompassed all these attributes, characteristics and strengths more than anyone I have met. She was my mentor and late night companion in the garden. Even after she had worked a long day in the field, she’d come out to help me plant after her dinner and we’d talk about the old days, growing strategies and the latest trends in farming. Although she was in hospice, she longed to be on the farm in her garden. Many in the floriculture industry knew her for designing the most gorgeous hanging baskets. You’d find them in Gastown, Canada Place and Whistler to name a few. She created beauty and was humble about her work. While she is at peace now with her Lord and Saviour, Urban Farm Girl will continue to honour her legacy and our goal is to sustainably grow the most beautiful flowers just like she did. We will miss her dearly.
