It's probably time to hill up your potatoes! Roll up the sides of your bags, and add more soil and compost, covering the stem leaving just the top leaves exposed.

For perfect peas give them a trellace to climb on. This one was made out of chicken wire and stripped willow shoots.

For rad radishes get the lil radish guys out of the way so the other ones can get bigger. One seedling per hole. Make sure you pick and eat them before they start to bolt - that's when the center stem gets long and wood-like.

It's time to be getting your soil ready for planting (if you haven't already). Here is Maddy getting her personal garden plot ready to grow this season. If you need help knowing what veggies do well up here and how to care for them, our garden expert Julie can create a plan for you, and even come by your garden to help plant and teach you a thing or two. The rate for garden plans and planting help is 35$ an hour.

Not only will we build you garden beds that are designed to last, we will also fill them with a mixture of soil that will make your veggies happy and then provide you with a map and planting instructions for each veggie you want to grow this summer. If you need help planting we will come over and either do it all for you while you relax, or we can walk you through it step by step. Whatever you need help with to be able to successfully grow your own food this summer, we want to help!

This was an amazing video lesson, if you are gardening this summer and have some time this weekend we highly recommend watching. It is full of very useful tips on how to deal with and prevent weeds. Some highlights: - Shredded cardboard is the way to go (Julian Morse can we get the city a cardboard shredder please?) - Burning chickweed is apparently very effective - If your garden is overrun by stubborn weeds, think about tarping half of it for a year to kill them, then do... the other half the next year. If you're not following Northern Farm Training Institute you should be!

Hot tip - have your morning coffee (or tea) out in the garden while you water your plants - this will ensure that the water makes its way to the roots before it gets evaporated by the midday sunshine. Although it's snowing in May right now, growing season is just around the corner!

We are open for business! If you have been wanting to grow your own veggies and herbs but just haven't had the time, patience, or maybe you just have no idea where to start, we are here to help! We start with a free (socially distant) consultation either over the phone or in your yard to take a look at the space, and get to know what you are looking for from your garden. ... Then we come up with a plan for you, and send you a quote for everything from materials, to labour for us to set it up. Once we get the go ahead, we get to work! You can be as involved in each step as you like.
