We're excited to introduce the Special Olympics Yukon Athlete of the Month presented by Whitehorse Keystone Kop Society ! This month we are featuring long-term ...athlete, Garry Chaplin! Garry has been a part of Special Olympics for almost 25 years... and counting! Garry has trained and competed in 8 different community based programs. His most notable accomplishments include 7 National Games appearances and was member of Special Olympics Team Canada that participated at the 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games held in Nagano, Japan. Garry won Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in Nordic Skiing at these Games. When he’s not participating in Special Olympics Yukon’s sport programs, you’ll probably find Garry at one of his many jobs depending on the day, he’ll either be helping FH Collins Secondary School with their paper recycling, preparing your latte at Starbucks or supporting the team at H&R Block. Garry’s a native Yukoner, so he knows how long our winters are, but he still can’t wait to get out on the links this spring and use his ‘grandfather clock’ technique to smack golf balls down the fairway. Until then, he’s keeping busy by watching HGTV and working on his latest round of arts n’ crafty greeting cards (someone in his family always seems to be having a wedding, birthday or anniversary) We’re proud to have Garry as part of Special Olympics Yukon. Day 4 for #SOTY2020 presented by Urban Realty Group was very exciting! Darby McIntyre won his third medal of the Special Olympics Canada 2020 Winter Games Thund...er Bay...another GOLD! This time in the 10km classic. Owen is taking home a second medal with his super performance in the 10km classic. He adds a Silver medal to his Games experience here in scenic Thunder Bay. Ernest won his second medal of the games and the 7th (yes, 7 medals earned by 3 athletes!) medal for the #SOTY2020 Cross Country ski team. Thanks to a great ski in the 1km final, Ernest adds a bronze medal around his neck. The Curling Team started off strong in their final Round Robin game, starting off with a 3-0 lead after 3 ends. Thanks to some incredible shots made by Thunder Bay, the Yukon lead slowly slipped away and resulted in a tough loss for our mighty squad. Carrie, Albert, Edward, Chris and Gaetan each had a number of fantastic shots in the match amdbheld their heads high. The afternoon's 5th place game had Yukon pitted against Nova Scotia. After a back and forth battle, they shook hands after 7 ends for a 4-4 tie. Tijana McCarthy and Mike Sumner hit the ice for their Games moment, for which they have waited for all week. Tijana started things off with a compelling performance that got the entire arena clapping away. She finished outside the medals but you wouldn't know it the way she won over the crowd!. Mike skated his heart out and got himself a silver medal for his effort. The Yuoon cheers were loud and plentiful during his skate too! Both skaters rose to the challenge of going up a Level since the 2017 World games. They skated 3 to 4 times per week for the past year and a half (in the summer too!) To prepare for these games. As we have said before, it's not just about the medals, it's also about what you have learned along the way. Our skaters have made us sooooo proud in how far they have come. The future is bright. Quotes of the day: "Hmmm...Persians!" "Its ok that I didnt win gold...I've got 4 years to prepare for the next games" "I am so proud of my teammates" Saturday's agenda sees our 3 skiers entered in the relay followed by the closing ceremonies.
